Award given annually to a player for community service

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – As a youth, Adam Prentice learned from his late father, Gary, giving back to the community was a valuable way to contribute to society. Prentice, from Fresno, Calif., hasn't stopped since enrolling at Colorado State, and for the second consecutive year the junior fullback has been placed on the Wuerffel Trophy watch list.

He was one of 86 players named on Thursday, and one of 10 who were on the list in 2018. Earlier this month, he was part of the Allstate AFCA Good Works nominee list for the second year in a row.

The Wuerffel Trophy, which originated in 2005, is recognized as college football's top honor for community service. Named after the 1996 Heisman Trophy winner, Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, it is presented to the FBS player who best combines community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 5, finalists on Nov. 18. The winner will be announced at the National Football Foundation's event on Dec. 10 in New York City. The presentation of the trophy will take place at the 51st All Sports Association Awards banquet Feb. 14, 2020, in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

Prentice, a civil engineering major, has left a mark aside from his impact on the field for the Rams. He takes part in elementary school visits in Fort Collins as part of the Reading with the Rams initiative, as well as when groups of students visit the campus to spend time with athletes.

He has assisted in running events at a local elementary school carnival, interacting with students all evening, and helps coach youth football. A message he consistently delivers to them is the importance of education.

For the past two years, he has been involved with a Night To Shine, a prom-like event for students with special needs sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation, serving as a companion for a guest.

In May of 2018, he took participated in CSU's Green and Global Campaign, joining 11 other athletes on a trip to Petersfield, Jamaica. He lived with a host family for 10 days, meeting with students of the community and helping to resurrect the community park and putting down gravel for the placement of a new playground at an elementary school.
