Schedule features two of the best invites in the country
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State cross country coach Art Siemers announced the schedule for the 2019 season, one he feels will prepare and challenge his men's and women's teams for big postseason meets.
"What we try to do every year is go to the biggest meets in the country," Siemers said. "This year, we have debatably two of the toughest invitationals in the country at Notre Dame and Wisconsin. Those set us up well to beat some teams and get an at-large berth (for the NCAAs)."
The Rams will travel to Laramie, Wyo., on Sept. 6 for the Wyoming Open, then will have nearly a month off before racing again. The Joe Piane Invitational in South Bend, Ind., (Oct. 4) and the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational (Oct. 18) are two weeks apart, with a portion of the CSU roster competing at the UCCS Open in between in Colorado Springs on Oct. 12.
Siemers' teams will have a mix of the old and new for both the men and women, who finished third and seventh, respectively, at the Mountain West Championships in 2018. He will have eight redshirt freshmen ready to compete with four of the roster's top finishers from the NCAA Championships. The women's roster will feature 10 new runners, three of whom are transfers from schools in the Pac-12 and Big 12.
"Every year we don't shy away from the bigger meets," Siemers said. "It has helped us at the NCAA Championships the past couple of years. We want to train for the end of the season, but getting that early meet exposure goes a long way, as well."
