Kohan promoted to associate head coach

Hilbert pays off loyalty, dedication to progressing the program
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Emily Kohan has taken her job description as a Colorado State volleyball coach and started coloring outside the lines, all to the benefit of the program.
Head coach Tom Hilbert has seen her expand the program's reach on social media, address recruiting with new paths and progress the opportunities in the camps the Rams run. In return, he extended her title to associate head coach, he announced Monday.
"Her reach is expanding," Hilbert said. "She's added value in a number of ways without being asked. We've transformed social media with her."
The daughter of two teachers, Kohan has always sought to increase her knowledge about whatever she does, and as a collegiate coach, the research has taken her well beyond on-court teaching.
"I've never been afraid to learn new things," Kohan said, entering her fourth season. "I think a huge part of being a part of CSU volleyball is the community. Running extra camps for kids, whether it's middle schools or cost-effective serving camps, or being innovative in the recurring world in other sports. Football and basketball are on the cutting edge of what recruiting is, so I'm trying to keep up with what they're doing so we can incorporate that in what we do."
Technically, the job title doesn't come with new responsibilities since Hilbert knows she's going to jump in anyway. It may be as simple as presenting an idea, always with the offer of seeing it through on her own. On the court, Kohan is in charge of the Rams' passing, defense and serving; off it, she shoulders a large responsibility in recruiting.
For Hilbert, it's a recognition of a job well done and gratitude for her efforts in helping to push his program to new heights. For Kohan, the new title means business as usual.
"CSU Volleyball is a special program for so many reasons, and it's an honor to continue my growth as a coach in Fort Collins," Kohan said. "Growing up in Colorado and in a Rams family, I have always respected this program and value being in a community that loves volleyball. The future of this team is bright, and I'm excited to keep working hard so the Rams continue to have national prominence. I appreciate Tom's belief in me throughout my time on staff and thank him for this opportunity."
Colorado State's players report for camp Friday and begin practice Saturday. The regular season begins Aug. 30 with a trio of home matches over the course of two days at Moby Arena, capped by the White Out game with Oklahoma on Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m.
