FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Both the men's and women's Colorado State cross country teams advanced in the Mountain West Midseason Coaches' Poll to No. 1 and No. 4, respectively, the conference office announced Thursday.
In the preseason poll last month, the CSU men were pinned third, while the women were slotted for fifth.
The Ram men, ranked 14th in the USTFCCCA national rankings, received 57 points, tying with Wyoming, but CSU had four first-place votes compared to the Cowboys' three. Colorado State, previously No. 3, and Wyoming, previously No. 2, jumped the preseason favorite Boise State who now sits in the No. 3 spot with 52 points.
On the women's side, CSU picked up 72 points – nine more than the preseason voting. New Mexico (100) remains the MW favorite followed by Boise State (91) and Air Force (73) who edged the Rams by one point. The Rams jumped Utah State in the rankings with the Aggies now in fifth with 57 points.
The Rams have only been in action once this season, but performed admirably.
The women won the 5,000-meter Wyoming Invite over Colorado, Wyoming, and Western Colorado. Six Rams finished in the top-15, including a fifth-place showing from redshirt-sophomore Lily Tomasula-Martin, which registered as a career-best time of 18 minutes and 11.2 seconds and later earned her the MW Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
Following right after in the Wyoming Invite was the men's third-place finish. Seven Rams crossed in the top-25, including two freshmen that ran unattached in Noah Bodewes (18th) and Preston Norris (24th). Senior Forrest Barton led the way with a career-high 5K time of 15:12.7 for second place.
The Rams are back in action on Oct. 4, in the Joe Piane Invitational, located in South Bend, Ind.
The 2019 MW Championships are slotted for Nov. 1 in Logan, Utah.
