Memorable Moments: Bibbs Goes Off vs. Nevada

Back sets single-day rushing record with a flourish

His first rush of the day was for 1 yard. By the end of the first half, Kapri Bibbs had just 50 yards against the Nevada defense back on Nov. 9, 2013. It looked like a rather pedestrian afternoon for the sophomore running back.

Looks can be deceiving.

In the second half, Bibbs was about to embark on the greatest rushing day in Colorado State football history and put together a monumental two-game streak. For a back who had shown some serious glimpses – he had posted a pair of 100-yard games prior in the season – he was ready to shine.

"I remember being excited to finally get the opportunity to break through and show my worth for the team at that point and time," Bibbs said. "Finally seeing everything come to fruition, from starting the season fourth on the depth chart and working my way up into a moment like that when I could break a record. I think I was more in awe of the fact that I was making my dreams come true."

After 50 yards at half, Bibbs had 59 yards in the first drive alone of the second half, capped by a 28-yard touchdown run which put the Rams briefly ahead of the Wolf Pack. He added three more scoring runs in the game, the final blow an 85-yard burst to put the nail in a 38-17 victory.

At the end of the day, he rushed for a school-record 312 yards, posting four touchdowns. A week later at New Mexico, he gained 291 yards and scored six touchdowns.

"What I remember most was honestly after the game was over, my head coach (Jim McElwain), we were alone, and he said I should go back and look at film and figure out how I could have had 400 yards," Bibbs said. "I think he was joking, but that's what I can't forget."

The two didn't always see eye-to-eye. Bibbs was explosive, for certain, but a fumble in the season opener seemed to set him back on the depth chart at the beginning of the season. He had a season-low in carries the fourth week at Alabama (five), but a week later he erupted for 147 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns against UTEP.

The genie had escaped the bottle. Even still, McElwain would not let the press speak to him during the year, and that didn't sit well with the back, who had plenty to talk about.

A mix of power and explosion, Bibbs would embark on the single-greatest rushing season in program history. His 85-yard run was a perfect example of what he could do on the field.

"One hundred percent. I'm not a guy who likes to look left and right," Bibbs said. "If I see open field, I'm going to score. I knew I was out of there. A lot of guys don't see a touchdown when they should, especially from 80 yards out. It's a different type of feeling, to be sure. I just focus on running and running as fast as I can."

That day set him on a path to set a number of records, season and single game.

He finished the year with a single-season mark of 1,741 yards and 31 touchdowns. He scored nine of them at New Mexico's home (including the New Mexico Bowl victory), more than any Lobo back had at home that year.

The 85-yarder didn't get Bibbs the single-game record. That came on the six additional yards he gained as the Rams ran out the clock, eclipsing the previous record of 310 by Tony Alford in 1989.

"I didn't even know I was going to break any records. Nobody told me," Bibbs said. "I was just trying to win a game for my team. I was out there, and that last run broke through.  That was like a dagger for them, and to cap them off with an 80-plus yard run was amazing. I got to show off my wheels, too."
