Rams Split Opening Day at The Garman

Colorado State started the week with a win against GCU before dropping the second contest of the day to Illinois
FULLERTON, Calif. – The Colorado State softball team started the Judi Garman Classic splitting games on the first day. The Rams earned a 6-2 victory in the opener against Grand Canyon, but suffered a loss in the second game of the day versus Illinois.

Game One vs. Lopers | Box Score
Colorado State's bats exploded in the first game as it recorded 10 hits to score six runs. The Rams jumped on the board first in the first inning after Ashley Ruiz knocked a two-RBI double to left center. CSU added to its lead in the third after Corina Gamboa tallied her ninth double of the season to push a run across. Colorado State scored its last runs of the game in the fifth frame after registering four hits and scoring three runs – all on single-base hits. GCU had just four hits in the game and Taylor Gilmore was looking to secure her second shutout of the year, but the Lopers spoiled it recording two hits and scoring two runs.

Game Two vs. Fighting Illini | Box Score
In the second game of the day, the Rams' bats went cold, not recording their first hit or baserunner of the game until the final frame. Colorado State wasn't giving Illinois anything easy either as Jessica Jarecki allowed just three hits all game. Where the Fighting Illini capitalized was drawing four walks and on the Rams' three errors. Ashley Michelena spoiled Illinois' perfect game in the final inning, recording an infield single.
