Marks third consecutive year for NCAA’s career active leader in punting

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – As has become habit in his career, Colorado State senior punter Ryan Stonehouse was named to the Ray Guy Award preseason watch list Wednesday, marking three successive seasons.

No surprise, as the La Verne, Calif., product enters his final season as the Rams' career punting leader at 47.0 yards per attempt, ranking him first nationally for active career average. In 2019, Stonehouse averaged 46.4 yards per punt, placing 13 of his 49 attempts inside the opponent's 20. He had 16 punts of 50 yards or longer, with five touchbacks against inducing nine fair catches.

His average was down from the year prior by design, with Stonehouse's improvements in placement and hang time leading to a resurgence for the Colorado State punt-coverage unit, ranking sixth nationally in net punting at 42.3 yards per attempt.

Stonehouse has garnered first-team All-Mountain West honors the past two seasons, earning honorable mention recognition as a true freshman. He was named to the 2019 midseason Guy Award watch list, and in 2018, was a Sporting News second-team All-American. He heads into his senior season in prime position to lock down the career punting records at the FBS level (which stands at 46.3) and in the Mountain West (45.4).

The Augusta Sports Council annually presents the Ray Guy Award to the nation's top collegiate punter, selected through a vote of college media and organizational members. As the season plays out, additional candidates may be added, with a group of 10 semifinalists released on Nov. 24. The three finalists will be released on Dec. 2, with the winner announced Dec. 10 as part of The Home Depot College Football Awards, broadcast on ESPN.
