Update from Director of Athletics Joe Parker on Mountain West Football
9/24/2020 8:58:00 PM | Football, General
The Mountain West Board of Directors voted tonight to bring football back on October 24 with an eight-game conference schedule.
Â
Dear Rams,
Â
Since August, when the Mountain West postponed all fall competition, each member institution in partnership with our medical experts have been focused on how we can resume competition for the many cross country, football, soccer and volleyball student-athletes who suffered the disappointment of having their seasons postponed. Our spring student-athletes dealt with this disappointment in March when their seasons were canceled as well.
Â
Tonight, I am happy to share that the Mountain West Board of Directors have voted to resume the 2020 football season with an eight-game conference schedule beginning on October 24 and will conclude with a conference championship game on December 19. Colorado State University, the Mountain West and each member institution's first priority remains the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and the local communities they represent. The decision to host football competition this fall was made only after comprehensive evaluation and expert guidance provided by the medical, health and safety professionals from each member institution who have assisted with our careful evaluation process.Â
Â
However, like most of the areas of our lives, this football season will look and feel different.Â
Â
At this time, we do not anticipate that we will host fans for the four home games inside Canvas Stadium. This is disappointing to everyone as there are so many fans who care deeply about Colorado State and want to support our student-athletes in person. The experience for our student-athletes is simply better when you are in the stands. We will continue to work closely with our state, county and university health officials to evaluate if the current no-fan status can change at some point.
Â
A complete 2020 schedule, including television assignments, will be released in the coming days, and our flagship radio partner, Townsquare Media and Power 102.9 FM, will broadcast all games with the "Voice of the Rams" Brian Roth and Mark Driscoll.
Â
I also have several other updates that I want to make sure you are aware of. On September 16, the NCAA Division I Council announced the following important decisions:
Â
Each Mountain West member institution will continue the robust health and safety procedures established with enhanced testing protocols to facilitate the safest possible return to competition. We are extremely pleased to be able to provide a competitive season opportunity to the many student-athletes who have been working hard academically and training for the sport they love. All of the student-athletes who are currently active on our football roster have chosen to opt-in to participation this fall, but will continue to have the opportunity to adjust their status should they choose to do so without any impact to their financial aid or scholarship. Similarly, any football student-athlete who may have selected to not participate in team activities this fall, may also reevaluate that decision because he expected the season to take place in the spring.  Â
Â
Thank you for your continued support of our student-athletes and please continue to take care of yourself and each other.Â
Â
Warmly,

Joe Parker
