Mountain West Coaches’ Poll has Colorado State men to finish first and women fourth
COLORADO SPRING, Colo. – Heading into competition, the Colorado State men's cross country team has the expectation to win the Mountain West, while the women were picked to finish fourth according to the league's head coaches' poll, announced Wednesday by the league office. Â
Â
The vote margin was close with Boise State matching CSU's three first-place votes, but the Rams, ranked No. 21 in the USTFCCCA national poll, gathered 43 points to the Broncos 40. Receiving one first place vote apiece, Air Force and Utah State are not far behind in expectation with 38 and 35 points, respectively. All this points to what should be a competitive season and conference championship when all meet in Las Vegas on March 5th.
Â
The men have finished in the top-3 of the Mountain West for eight-straight seasons, dating back to 2011. Within that span, the Rams captured their first Mountain West Championship in 2017, while also placing ninth at the NCAA Championships twice in 2017 and 2018. Last season, CSU finished second with a roster chalk full of freshman and redshirts.
Â
On the women's side, New Mexico is the preseason Conference favorite after garnering 81 points and nine first-place votes. Boise State and Air Force follow with 70 and 67 points, respectively, before the Rams' slot in fourth at 56 points.
Â
The ladies return all nine runners that competed in last year's conference meet in which they finished fourth, including All-Mountain West recipient Lily Tomasula-Martin who finished sixth overall.
Â
Both Colorado State teams start the 2021 season in a dual with Wyoming this Saturday, Jan. 23rd in Cheyenne, Wyo. at the North Cheyenne Community Park.
