Broncos Rally Past Rams

Camper kicks four field goals in home loss

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – On a night when Colorado State had trouble in short quarters, Boise State thrived in wide-open spaces.

Intent on picking up their first win ever against Boise State, Colorado State built a 13-0 lead in the first quarter, but it felt like it could have been more as the Rams settled for a pair of short field goals in the red zone.

As the game wore on, the Broncos proved adept at driving the field or hitting big plays, resulting in a 28-19 victory – their 11th in the series – at Canvas Stadium on Saturday night in front of 25,221.

The most stunning part of the game for Colorado State was twice punter Ryan Stonehouse pinned the Broncos on their own 3-yard line, only to have the Broncos produce two 97-yard touchdown drives.

"We've got to get off the field there," said Thomas Pannunzio, a gunner on the punt unit and nickel back in coverage. "You can't let someone go 97 yards on you and then score a touchdown. Those are game-breaking drives, and that's something that happened to us twice. It's something that we've got to get off the field and make plays when plays come our way. As a defense, we have to put a big emphasis on it, because having Stoney put someone down on the 3 is a huge weapon we need to take advantage of."

The first cut the lead to 13-7 as the Broncos covered the field in 13 plays, taking 6:09 off the clock as Hank Bachmeier found Octavius Evans on a 9-yard scoring play. Colorado State countered with another red-zone field goal, pushing the lead to 16-7 at halftime after another trip into the red zone.

The way the first half played out, head coach Steve Addazio liked, particularly the first quarter. Addazio – who coached the first three quarters from the press box due to a lower leg injury -- expected more of the same in the second half, too.

"I really liked the way we were playing in the first half. We were moving the ball and making a lot of plays, but you want to get more touchdowns than you do field goals," he said. "I think our third quarter was not a good quarter. I mean, it just wasn't good on either side of the ball. We needed to come out and play lights out in the third quarter, and obviously we didn't do that. That's the most disappointing thing to me is the way we played in the third quarter. It wasn't in line with the way we played in the first half at all."

Special teams would continue to play a role as the Broncos charged on in their comeback, as the next score was set up by a 32-yard punt return by Khalil Shakir, leading to Evans' second touchdown, this one a 13-yard end-around.

Their second long drive of the game gave the guests the lead for good, as an 11-yard toss from Bachmeier to Stefan Cobbs capped another 13-play march.

Colorado State's offense just went stale after the first 15 minutes. Unable to produce a traditional running game with the running backs (they were limited to just 43 yards on 23 carries), the offense relied heavily on quarterback Todd Centeio, who did his best to produce.

The third quarter has been a question mark most of the year for the Rams, and it was again against Boise State. The Rams had the ball three times in the frame – once starting at their own 2 – the others at their own 25 after kickoffs.

"All the guys were jacked up to come out there and play against the Boise State team," running back David Bailey said. "You see in the first quarter, guys were moving the ball every time on them, but I feel after the first half, the second half we came out too flat, and you see the result in the game."

Centeio competed 23 of 36 passes, including a 30-yard touchdown to tight end Cam Butler, his first score since the opener in 2019. Centeio closed with 276 yards in the air, and his legs helped extend drives and move the chains with 65 rushing yards on 10 attempts, one of them a sack. All it led to in the second half was another trip into the red zone for a 20-yard Cayden Camper field goal, his fourth of the game and 22nd of the season, which ranks second in a single season at CSU.

When the Rams did move the ball, it was through the air. Trey McBride finished with 10 catches for 103 yards, the sixth 100-yard game of his career. He also had a big catch negated by a holding call, one of a few strikes the Rams had which were turned aside by one of the five infractions they committed.

The field goal made it a one-possession game at 21-19, but Boise State was able to put the game away in the fourth quarter when Bachmeier hit Tyneil Hopper for a 51-yard score with 9:30 remaining.

"We just didn't get off the field. I don't use the words disheartening, I just feel we didn't get off the field," Addazio said. "In the third quarter, we finally got off the field but got pinned inside the 2. I think on the next drive we had the penalty which brought us back inside the 20, which was darn near a 60-yard swing. You just can't have that in these kind of games.

"Again, we kicked too many field goals with too many opportunities in the first half inside the red zone, and on defense, we didn't get off the field when we had plenty of third-down opportunities in the second half."

Boise State effectively iced the game with a non-scoring drive of 14 plays, erasing 7:14 off the clock and leaving CSU with just 32 seconds to work with. It made time of possession even more lopsided, as the Broncos controlled the clock for 32: 37, finishing with 430 yards of total offense. It was just the second time this season -- and the first time since the opener -- an opponent had exceeded 400 yards against the Rams.

Colorado State is back on the road Saturday for the annual Border War with Wyoming (1:30 p.m.), the 112th meeting in the series.
