Stonehouse is on pace to set the NCAA’s career record for punt average.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Throughout his career at Colorado State, punter Ryan Stonehouse has racked up just about every award possible from All-Conference to All-American, but for the first time in his decorated career, he has been named a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award.

On pace to shatter the FBS career record for punt average – 47.7 yards per punt as Nov. 10 – Stonehouse is currently No. 2 nationally in 2021 averaging a career-best 51.5 yards per punt, a half-yard behind the national leader. Among the NCAA's leaders in punt average this season, no punter in America has a higher percentage of 50-yard boots than Stonehouse's 60.9 percent.

Earlier this season, Stonehouse set an FBS record for most career punts of 50 yards or more, surpassing Baylor's Daniel Sepulveda (2003-06) previous mark of 94. Currently, the La Verne, Calif., native has 102 career punts that have eclipsed the 50-yard mark.

A model of consistency, Stonehouse needs one more game averaging 40.0 yards or better to tie the FBS record for games at that mark or better in his career. A second such game – with three regular season games remaining – would give him yet another FBS record.

Within the program record books, Stonehouse already owns the top mark and third-best mark for single-season punt average, and his 51.5 yards per punt this season would shatter his current top mark of 48.3. The 51.5 yards per punt is also on pace to break the FBS single-season marks of 50.3 (min. 36), 49.8 (min. 40), and 51.0 (min. 50). He currently trails San Diego State's Matt Araiza, the national leader at 51.9.

He is also defying the popular, yet incorrect, belief that playing an altitude is a benefit to kicking performance. Over the course of his 50-game career, Stonehouse averages 47.7 yards at elevation and even better when he is not at elevation – 47.8 yards per punt.

Stonehouse is the third Colorado State Ram to earn semifinalist distinction this season joining fellow specialist Cayden Camper (Groza) and tight end Trey McBride (Mackey).
