Rams Open Schedule at Texas A&M Invitational

Colorado State will play five games against three different opponents over the three days.

TEXAS A&M INVITATIONAL
Colorado State will finally get its 2021 season underway as the Rams head to College Station for the Texas A&M Invitational, Feb. 20-22 at Davis Diamond.
 
CSU will face three different non-conference opponents over the three days and playing five games. The Rams will begin the tournament on Saturday morning facing Texas Tech at 9 a.m., MT and host Texas A&M that afternoon at 4:30 p.m., MT. CSU will continue action at Sunday playing Central Arkansas at 9 a.m., before seeing the Aggies again at 11:30 a.m. The Rams finish the week Monday morning with Texas Tech at 8 a.m.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Colorado State was scheduled to begin its 2021 campaign last week at the Texas Classic, but severe weather canceled the opening week.
 
It's will have been 349 days since the Rams last played a game of softball, dating back to March 8, 2020 against Purdue. CSU and the rest of the nation had to cancel the rest of its season due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
 
The Rams finished the 2020 season 11-12 and did not play a Mountain West contest.
 
SEASON OPENING RECORDS
Colorado State will begin its season against Texas Tech at the Texas A&M Inviational. Jen Fisher is 5-5 in season openers at CSU and the Rams are 7-13 in openers since 2013.
 
PRESEASON SEASON POLL
As still the defending Mountain West Conference Champion, Colorado State was voted sixth in the Mountain West Preseason Coaches' Poll.
 
CARRYING OVER
A couple players from 2020 will carry over a few batting streaks into the 2021 season. Ashley Michelena will bring a two game hitting streak into the season, including a two game  on-base streak. Tara Shadowen also brings a pair of hits and on-base streaks.
 
OPPONENT SCOUT
Red Raiders: Texas Tech will also start its season this weekend after its series with Texas State was postponed last week. The Red Raiders had a 17-9 overall record before the stoppage in 2020. Texas Tech welcomes back six starters back, including four pitchers.
 
Bears: Central Arkansas started its season last week at the LSU Tiger Classic and will carry a 0-3 record into the week. The Bears dropped a pair of contents to then-No. 25 Duke and Kansas last week. UCA had an 18-9 record and a 3-0 mark in the Southland in 2020 before the stoppage.
 
Aggies: Host Texas A&M will begin its season this week after last weeks Aggie Classic was canceled due to the weather sweeping across Texas. The Aggies had a 17-9 overall mark and 1-2 record in the Big 12 before the stoppage in 2020. TAMU will welcome back six starters from a season ago, including four pitchers.
 
RETURNERS
Colorado State returns nearly its entire roster on both sides of the ball from 2020.
 
Pitchers: Colorado State sees all four pitchers from last year who made a start, including a pair of freshmen. Julia Cabral and Danielle Serna will look to get into the rotation after combining for four starts and 10 appearances. Veterans Jessica Jarecki and Taylor Gilmore will be regulars in the circle after seeing over 100 innings last season.
 
Defense: The Rams return all but one defensive player from 2020. CSU will need to fill first place with the graduate of Ashley Ruiz who played in 72 games for the Green and Gold in her two seasons.
 
Offense: CSU will welcome back six of its seven top sluggers from a season ago. Ashley Michelena will turn in the lead-off spot for her senior season after leading the Rams from the dish with a .300 batting averaging, including 24 hits, three triples and 14 runs scored.
