Rams Show Resilience after Day One at Texas A&M Invitational

2/20/2021 9:32:00 PM | Softball

Colorado State dropped a nine-inning contest against Texas Tech before hanging on for a victory against Texas A&M.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – With the Colorado State softball season finally getting underway, it has been a long journey to get to today. Open day. The Rams originally were supposed to start the season at Texas last week for the Texas Classic, but weather cancelled that before they could even get to the airport. This weekend's game were also delayed a day due to weather across Texas. And to add to it all, Colorado State traveling wasn't as smooth, as it had to split up due to waiting for COVID-19 test results. One word comes to Head Coach Jen Fisher's mind for this team.

"Resilient."

The Colorado State softball team began the 2021 campaign with a positive day at the Texas A&M Invitational, going nearly perfect. The Rams started the day dropping a nine-inning contest against Texas Tech, before responding with a win against host Texas A&M.

GAME ONE | Texas Tech (L, 3-1) | Box Score
Colorado State began the day facing Texas Tech and needed two extra frames to decide the outcome. The Rams and Red Raiders both scored their first runs of the year in the second inning and carried that score through the next six frames. In the top of the ninth, Texas Tech used three hits to score two runs and took the lead. CSU looked to respond in the bottom of the inning, but could not manufacture a hit.

There were many positives from the opener, the first coming from the circle. Senior Jessica Jarecki made the start and hurled the whole nine frames on her way to a career-high 14 strikeouts, with seven coming in regulation. The senior also recorded a pair of innings where she retired the side. She was tagged with the loss, allowing seven hits and two earned runs. Six Rams registered a hit, including Jordan Acosta who tallied two hits and an RBI. CSU also turned its first double play of the year in the first inning. One thing Colorado State will look to change is how to convert 13 runners left on base into runs.

"We just battled and I think that game was really good for us," said Jen Fisher. "I think we played great defense, I think Jess only had one walk and she just pitched really well. We played awesome defense, we just couldn't quite square anything up and just came up a little bit short."

GAME TWO | Texas A&M (W, 7-6) | Box Score
Head Coach Jen Fisher has scheduled Texas A&M a handful of times in her career, but hasn't seen the win column in those five contests. Tonight she changed that, as the Rams took down the Aggies for their first victory of the 2021 season. TAMU scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the first; after an error in the frame helped two runs score. The Rams did not let that stick in their minds long as they responded with a six-run inning the next at bat after registering six runs on six hits. The inning included a pair of triples by Ashley York and Ashley Michelena to propel the Rams into the lead, one they wouldn't lose. Texas A&M scored two runs in the bottom of the third to narrow the CSU lead, but Corina Gamboa grabbed her first homer of the season in the top of the fifth to push the lead back to there. The Aggies threated in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run homer with one out, but Taylor Gilmore ended the game with a pair of fly outs to secure the win.

There was a lot of great stuff in the game, including four extra base hits. Both Corina Gamboa and Ashley Michelena had a pair of hits, while Gamboa had three RBI. Ashley York made her collegiate debut, hitting a triple in her first at-bat. CSU scored seven runs - all by different players. Danielle Serna started in the circle, hurling 2 1/3 innings before Taylor Gilmore finished the game, allowing just two hits and two earned runs, while punching out five batters.

"I think Ashley York really fired everybody up, she's a freshman and she got she got a start in that in the game," said Jen Fisher. And to RBI triple in your first at-bat; you know that all of our freshmen were just so dialed in in that first game and just screaming and yelling for their teammates. It's a very unselfish group and they're very talented. I think that's exciting to see that; us performing and gaining some confidence. That's why we wanted to come down here and play some quality teams and show them they can play with anybody."

Colorado State will continue the Texas A&M Invitational tomorrow playing Central Arkansas at 9 a.m., MT and a rematch with Texas A&M at 11:30 a.m., MT.
