Team to face host Aggies, Boise State in conference play
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – After long layoffs, Colorado State's women's tennis team is set to finish the season in a flurry of matches, heading to Logan, Utah for a third-consecutive weekend of play.
Â
The Rams will face Utah State at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by the season finale with Boise State on Sunday, starting at 9:30 a.m. The match with the Aggies will have live scoring. Colorado State has won two of its past three matches to move to 2-2 in Mountain West play, 3-5 overall. Utah State is 7-11 on the season (2-6 in conference), while Boise State is 11-5, 5-3.
Â
"We're super excited, now that we have that match experience," CSU coach Jarod Camerota said. "Now it's about refining the little things that we need to do to get the wins."
Â
Last weekend was the first time this season Camerota had a full lineup at his disposal, allowing the team some flexibility. The doubles teams have fared well as of late, winning the point in the San Diego State dual, and even though they dropped it the next day to UNLV, all the matches were tight.
Â
Camerota is encouraged by the way the current pairings are playing, but he feels they can perform at an even higher level as they grow more accustomed to each other on the court.
Â
"I like our teams. I think we definitely need to get a little bit better at each spot, but I like them at the moment," he said. "If everybody just gets a little bit better with each match, we'll be fine."
Â
Last weekend, Alyssa Grijalva moved into a tie for seventh all time in career singles wins with 61 and a tie for fourth in career doubles victories with 58. She is also tied for 10th all-time with teammates Emily Luetschwager and Priscilla Palermo with 30 career dual doubles wins.
Â
Palermo did some moving of her own, now sitting seventh in career doubles win with 54; Luetschwager is in the ninth spot with 52.
Â
The final two matches give the Rams a chance to close the season with an even-up mark overall, possibly a winning record in conference play. After two long layoffs during the season created when the team had to cancel eight scheduled matches for COVID and weather concerns, performance is ahead of outcome in Camerota's thinking.
Â
"That would look great, reflecting back on it," he said. "But right now, it's sort of what can we do to beat Utah State. The beginning of the season seems like a whole different year. The focus is just on Utah State right now and what do we have to do to get better to win. Then it will be on Boise State. Then we can reflect on record and all that."
