Palermo's victory at No. 1 singles secures team outcome

LOGAN, Utah – For the third time this season, Colorado State's women's tennis team secured a Mountain West victory. And for the third time, it came down to the final match on the court to produce the 4-3 victory, toppling Utah State on the road on Saturday.

Priscilla Palermo at No. 1 singles was the final match on the court, and with the match tied at 3, she rallied from a first-set loss to pick up the win with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory. She staved off one match point on the way to the Rams beating the Aggies for the first time since 2005. Palermo also teamed with Tracy Guo in a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles.

Palermo has only appeared in five matches overall, four in singles play, as she began the season dealing with a shoulder injury. She has gone 2-1 in singles play, 3-1 at doubles.

"She's just been fighting so hard, and she's slowly just striking the ball cleaner and cleaner with each match," coach Jarod Camerota said. "She fought hard. She saved a match point today and fought back to win after losing the first set. In all of our wins, Anastasiia Kotsyuba and Alyssa Grijalva won at singles, and when those two win, the Rams seem to win, and Priscilla stepped up big."

Grijalva and Lou Regen produced a 6-2 victory in the second doubles spot, producing the first team point of the match. Grijalva won a three-setter at the No. 5 spot (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) and Kotsyuba – who was the last match on the court in the past two wins at No. 6 – won in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).

In all three of Colorado State's victories, the team has won the doubles point.

"I think our energy and our fight was just constant through doubles and through singles," Camerota said. "Whether people won or lost, they just kept fighting. It's just contagious when you see everybody else doing it, you just can't give up. I think we played decent and we keep getting a little bit better. It's not like we played perfect, we just fight perfectly and have great energy."

Colorado State improved to 4-5 overall, 3-2 in Mountain West play with one match remaining Sunday against Boise State, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
