The team heads to Las Vegas for a long weekend
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Rams have had a successful start to their 2022 season at home and away, and now the Colorado State women's tennis team is getting ready to match up with some of the area's best at the ITA Mountain Regional in Las Vegas.
Â
"I expect our team to do well at ITA Regionals looking at how we've done this fall," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "We have a couple tournaments under our belt, and I believe those matches helped us tremendously."
Â
This is the fourth consecutive time the event will be held in Las Vegas at the outdoor Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus. The tournament runs the same way as last year, starting Wednesday and ending with the finals on Sunday. The event features teams within the Mountain Region, and the athletes will play on the 12 courts in both singles and doubles each day. Doubles action begins Wednesday at 10 a.m. (MT) and will be followed by two full rounds of singles flights. Running the same as last year, every player will be guaranteed at least two singles matches.
Â
So far this fall, the Rams have played in three tournaments with the most recent one being the ITA All-American Championships. It was the first time Colorado State was represented in this prestigious event.
Â
Last year at the ITA Mountain Regionals, Radka Buzkova and Matea Mihaljevic won the doubles title, beating – oddly enough – teammates Sarka Richterova and Somer Dalla-Bona in the finals. Buzkova and Mihaljevic prevailed in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. It was the first time a Colorado State player had reached an ITA Regional final.
Â
Looking forward to this week, the Rams have recovered and put in the work to prepare for this tournament. Tran is planning to try out some new doubles pairings and feels as though her squad is ready.
Â
"I know the Mountain Region can be tough but I'm confident we can make a strong run as a team," Tran said.
Â
Sarah Weekley won a pair of titles at CSU's Jon Messick Invitational, both in singles and doubles, and Emily Dush, who took part at the ITA All-American event, won a singles title at the season-opening Bedford Cup. Weekley is 7-1 in singles this season, while Dush is 4-0. Luana Avelar, Ky Ecton and Vicktoryia Zhadzinskaya all have six doubles wins to their credit playing with a mixture of partners.
