Rams Battle During Day Two at Tracy Beard Classic

Colorado State looked to pick up its first win of the weekend, but came up short in the two games.

DENTON, Texas – The Colorado State softball team continued action on Saturday at the Tracy Beard Classic, facing Abilene Christian for the second time in as many days, before capping the afternoon with a game against Montana. The Rams lead early in both contests before suffering a pair of losses. CSU sits at 1-8 on the season heading into Sunday where it will face Montana in the weekend finale at the Tracy Beard Classic.

Colorado State scored the first run of the game in the opening frame after Peyton Allen smashed a solo homer to center – her third homer of the season. The Wildcats evened the game in the top of the third after a three-hit, two-run inning gave them the lead. ACU used a pair of doubles and a single to drive in the pair of runs. Abilene Christian added a run in fifth after a passed ball scored a runner from third. The Rams looked to mount a comeback in the final inning after Ashley York singled and Hailey Smith doubled during the following at bat to score the run, but CSU could not manufacture anything else.
 
Jetta Nannen was given the nod and the loss after throwing four frames and allowing three runs on four hits. The recorded two strikeout in the 18 batters faced. Julia Cabral came in on relief and tossed the final three innings punching out two batters. The Rams totaled four hits by four different players. Allen and Smith were the two to tally a RBI, including Smith knocking a double and Kaitlyn Cook also hitting an extra base hit.

The Rams looked to rebound in the second game of the day against the Griz, scoring the first run of the game in the opening inning. CSU had runners on first and second with two outs, before Hailey Smith kept her hot bat going with a RBI double to left. CSU's offense tapered off from there, recording just two hits the rest of the way – in the fourth and sixth. Montana took the lead in the third after a three-hit, four-run frame after two homers. The Griz added a run in the fourth off a leadoff home run and two insurance runs in the seventh with a pair of RBI singles.
 
Julia Cabral started in the circle and was tagged with the loss, throwing three inning and allowing five runs off six hits. Sydney Hornbuckle finished the game, hurling four innings and allowing two unearned runs. The pair combined for six strikeouts in the 37 batters faced.

Colorado State will finish the Tracy Beard Classic tomorrow morning facing Montana for the second time at 9 a.m., MT on FloSoftball.
