Rams Use Fifth Inning Surge to Beat Grizzlies

2/20/2022 12:13:00 PM | Softball

Colorado State used a five-run sixth inning to finish the weekend on a high note in the final day of the Tracy Beard Classic.

DENTON, Texas – In the final game of the Tracy Beard Classic, Colorado State was looking for its first win of the weekend to end on a high note. The Rams faced Montana in a rematch of Saturday's loss and evened the weekend series at 1-1 as they beat the Grizzlies, 8-3.

The Rams' offense jumped off to a quick start, just like the last couple of games, and scored three runs in the first inning. Ashley York and Danielle Serna led the charge hitting back-to-back doubles to give CSU the lead. The Grizzles would answer back in the second and fourth innings to cut the Rams' lead to one.

Neither teams had any production in the fifth, but Colorado State found its bats in the sixth. The Rams exploded in the sixth inning with five runs on six hits. All six hits in the inning were singles, including the first six batters reaching base before the first out.
Gracie Taylor, Hailey Smith, Morgan Crosby and Ashley Michelena all had RBI in the big inning that pushed Colorado State's lead to six at 8-2.

Montana scored in the home half of the sixth on a solo home run – which was the last score of the game.

Michelena and Smith both had perfect days at the plate, going 4-for-4 on the day. Smith was a homerun shy of the cycle, recording a triple at her first at bat, double in her second and single in the third. She had the chance in the final inning, but knocked a single though the left side. The Rams tallied a season-high 17 hits in the game, four of them for extra bases.

Danielle Serna added three hits on offense, while also earning her first win of the season from the circle. She allowed just three earned runs on 10 hits, but punched out six batters while going the distance.

UP NEXT
Colorado State will travel to the Lopes Up Classic in Phoenix, Arizona, Feb. 25-27 and play four different teams in the three days.
