Rams Battle During Day Two of Colorado State Classic

Colorado State suffered a pair of losses during day two of the Colorado State Classic, against Northern Colorado and No. 5/7 Washington.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State continued action on Saturday afternoon in the Colorado State Classic and suffered a pair of losses to Northern Colorado and No. 5/7 Washington. The Rams battled the Bears in the opening game of the day, going to extra innings before falling 4-3. CSU finished the day with a 6-3 loss against the Huskies, but recorded six hits against Washington's three-time All-American pitcher.

Game One vs. Northern Colorado | Box Score

Both teams were quiet in the first 2.5 frames before Colorado State scored first in the third after back-to-back singles with two outs. Ashley Michelena swiped second before coming around to score on an infield single from Ashley York. Northern Colorado tied the game again in the fifth before CSU plated two runs on two hits in the sixth, with some help from two UNC errors to lead by two. The Bears returned fire in the seventh with a two-run homer to tie the game again. The Rams went down in order in the final two frames, while Northern Colorado scored a run on a double steal to take the lead in the eighth after the international tiebreaker was in place.

Both Ashley Michelena and Makenna McVay recorded two hits apiece, while Danielle Serna hit her third homer of the year in sixth to give the Rams a 2-1 lead. Serna started the game in the circle and hurled the 7 1/3 innings before Jetta Nannen came in on relief. Nannen was tagged with the loss after allowing the winning run for the Bears in the eighth, but faced two batters, striking out both.

Colorado State put runners on base in all but the first frame and finally converted in sixth after Kaitlyn Cook hit a two-run homer with two outs. The Rams scored another run in the bottom of the seventh but could not keep the inning going.

Peyton Allen led the Rams' offense with two hits, while Kaitlyn Cook plated two runs. Makenna McVay recorded an extra-base hit in addition to Cook's homer. Sydney Hornbuckle started the game and was given the loss after hurling the first two innings, allowing four runs and walking a pair.
