Rams Begin Mountain West Action at San Diego State

Colorado State will play the Aztecs to begin league play starting on Saturday.
THIS WEEK
This Rams will begin Mountain West Conference action this weekend as they head to San Diego, Calif., for three games against San Diego State. Colorado State begins league play with an 8-13 overall record but will have one more non-conference tilt against Northern Colorado on April 12 at Ram Field. CSU and the Aztecs will play a doubleheader on Saturday staring at 3:00 p.m., MT before finishing the week on Sunday with a 12:00 p.m., MT first pitch.

Colorado State finished the majority of its non-conference schedule last week, hosting the Colorado State Classic and posting a 2-2 mark. The Rams recorded a pair of wins against Northern Colorado, both ending early in a run-rule victory. CSU faced then-No. 5/7 Washington, suffering a 6-3 loss, but registered six hits against the Huskies three-time All-American pitcher. UW scored four runs in the second off a pair of homers, which proved to be the difference.

The Aztecs recorded wins against Weber State, CSUN and San Diego with the lone lost against Weber State in extra frames. Other notable wins from SDSU's non-conference slate are a 6-2 win against Cal and upsetting then-No. 5 Washington at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Aztecs also suffered extra-inning one-run losses against then-No. 18/15 Northwestern and then-No. 16/19 Missouri. San Diego State will have one more non-conference contest on April 20 at UC San Diego.

San Diego State's Maggie Balint leads the squad from the circle and around the league, earning four Mountain West Pitcher of the Week awards, including earning it this week. Aztec freshmen Isabella Espinoza has grabbed MW Freshman of the Week twice, while Dee Dee Hernandez also was named it once. Mac Barbara leads the team with a .388 batting average, 16 runs scored, 33 hits – including seven doubles and 10 homers – 32 RBI and slugging .824. Espinoza follows with a .385 average and 30 hits. Hernandez paces the defense from the circle with a 1.59 ERA and a 3-3 overall record. The freshman has appeared in 15 games, making five starts and earning three saves in 44 innings pitched.
