Rams Drop Doubleheader in Conference Opener

Colorado State’s bats were shy in the conference opener.
SAN DIEGO – Colorado State began Mountain West action on Saturday, dropping a doubleheader at San Diego State. The Rams suffered a 6-2 defeat in game one before a 2-0 loss in the second. CSU falls to 8-15 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Colorado State struggled to find the open field in the first game, not recording a hit until the fifth inning. SDSU scored first and built a 5-0 lead heading into the fifth. Colorado State got on the board after Danielle Serna led the frame off with a solo homer to center field. San Diego State responded in the home half with a two-out solo homer to put the score at 6-1. The Rams scored their final run of the game in the seventh after Ashley York led the inning off with a triple to center. Hailey Smith followed with a sac fly to center to push the run across.

Colorado State recorded just two hits in the loss, with both RBI coming from Smith and Serna who each had one. Julia Cabral started in the circle, hurling four frames, and allowing five earned runs in the loss. Jetta Nannen came in on relief and tossed the final two frames allowing an earned run.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Colorado State tallied three hits – two of them coming in the second inning – to SDSUs two. The Aztecs scored first in the bottom of the first after an RBI single scored the first run. SDSU scored the second and final run of the game in the second after a CSU fielding error. Colorado State put runners on in the next three frames, but couldn't convert any to runs, including getting a runner on base in the seventh and the tying run at the plat with one out.

Sydney Hornbuckle started and was given the loss after hurling the six frames and allowing one earned run. The Rams three runs were recorded by three different players – York, Serna and Morgan Crosby.
