Rams Win: The 2022 Green and Gold Game

On a day when the score is irrelevant, Jay Norvell delivered a win for the Rams.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - When the score is mostly irrelevant, as they typically are in spring games, Colorado State Head Football Coach Jay Norvell managed to deliver an all-around victory for his program and the community he hopes to build around it during the 2022 Green and Gold Weekend.

"(Our staff) is part of the community," Norvell said following the spring game. "We want our team to be a part of the community and engage in the community. When we go out and play on Saturdays, we need our community. We need our fan base. We need our alumni. We need our former players. We need all of those people."

Stats were tallied to be sure. 522 yards of total offense for the Green team comprised mostly of the expected starters, in fact. But, at the end of it all, it was the totality of the day that really serves as the main takeaway from the 2022 Green vs. Gold Game.

Just ask alums Dane Stratton or Trae Moxley what the weekend was about.

Friday night, Norvell and his staff welcomed back over 100 former players to take part in the first edition of the alumni Ram Walk as part of the 130th celebration of Colorado State Football. The night was capped with a dinner hosted by Norvell and Director of Athletics Joe Parker.

And that was just Friday.

Saturday's game day began with the Grit Run, a 5k run/walk hosted by Norvell and his wife Kim, to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. More than 300 people signed up to run the race including plenty of those inspired to sign up on Saturday morning. Norvell capped the contribution with a $10,000 donation of his own. Kim was born with the disease, and medical advances to manage the disease for which there is no cure has significantly improved the quality of life for those who fight it.

Fans were then treated to a 141-play scrimmage in which the teams were split into a format Norvell dubbed "1's vs. The World." The White team was spotted a 21-0 lead to hang out to, and through the first half they looked like they just might. But, the Green team and quarterback Clay Millen (22-of-33, 292 yards, 4 touchdowns) came roaring back in the second half to pull out a 49-37 victory. It was a day for execution and opportunity, where younger players got the opportunity to don their game jerseys and compete on Sonny Lubick Field for fans.

Following the game, Norvell spoke briefly to his team before jetting into the locker room to meet and lead another squad onto the field as approximately 250 youth Ram fans had piled in for the program's free post-game clinic on the field.

Colorado State Athletics hopes the parents and guardians enjoy a restful night after tiring out their youngsters with an hour of football drills with the 2022 Rams.

In the end, the statistics and calls will be remembered only by graduate assistants and coaches, frantically logging the information to be reviewed at a later day.

This was a day for community, and football was also played.
