Rams Erupt for Season High Hits, Runs

4/29/2022 7:14:00 PM | Softball

Colorado State picked up a 16-4 victory in game on against the Wolf Pack on Friday afternoon.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State had five different Rams tallying multiple hits in the five inning, 16-4 rout of Nevada in game one on Friday. CSU recorded a season-high 17 hits and scored 16 runs in the win, both the most since the 2019 season.

Ashley York and Morgan Crosby were perfect from the plate, going 4-for-4 and 3-for-3, respectfully. Ashley Michelena, Hailey Smith and Danielle Serna all recorded multiple hits. Smith finished 3-for-4 with five RBI, while also scoring three runs along with York. Colorado State also totaled six extra-base hits, with Smith hitting a pair of doubles.

Sydney Hornbuckle earned the win from the circle, tossing the five frames allowing two earned runs and striking out seven batters. The sophomore faced 25 batters and gave up just five hits, including a triple and a homer.

With wind gusts up to 40 mph straight to center, both teams started the game hitting home runs in the opening frame. Nevada scored first with a two-out two-run homer to take the early lead. Colorado State responded in the home-half with four hits and scoring three runs. CSU hit back-to-back doubles before a Hailey Smith hit a homer to give the Rams a 3-2 lead.

From then, Colorado State's offense used the wind to extend its lead in the second with five runs on five hits, including Crosby hitting a two-run homer – her first of her career. In the third the Rams added another six runs on five hits to hold a 14-2 lead.

Nevada scored its last runs of the game in the fourth after pushing a pair of runs across on a CSU fielding error. Colorado State put the last two runs on the board in the fourth after four-consecutive base hits.
