4/30/2022 4:43:00 PM | Softball
Colorado State hosted the inaugural Pride Game on Saturday, celebrating its LGBTQ+ student-athletes, while promoting inclusion and allyship.
Â
Colorado State was led by Ashley Michelena who finished 3-for-4 from the dish and scored two runs. Ashely York and Brooke Bohlender also recorded multiple hits, each tallying a pair of base hits. Michelena, Danielle Serna, Peyton Allen and Kaitlyn Cook all recorded a double in the victory as well. Both York and Bohlended drove in two runners apiece.
Â
Julia Cabral started in the circle for CSU, tossing the first 2 1/3 frames before Jetta Nannen came in on relief. Cabral allowed five earned runs, while striking out two of the 16 batters faced. Nannen earned the win, hurling the last 4 2/3 innings, allowing no runs while facing 20 batters.
Â
Nevada scored the first runs of the game in the first inning, registering three hits to score a run. Colorado State responded in the bottom half with four runs on three hits. After loading the bases with no outs after back-to-back singles, Serna recorded the easiest RBI in the game after drawing a walk to tie the game. Two batters later, Bohlender hit a single to center to score a pair of runs. During the following at bat, CSU extended its lead to 4-1 after scoring on a wild pitch.
Â
Both teams were quiet in the second before Nevada took the lead again after a lead-off homer in the third inning and totaled six hits and four runs to lead 5-4.
Â
Colorado State tied the game in the fourth inning after Hailey Smith hit a sac fly to left to score Michelena who doubled down the left-field line earlier in the frame.
Â
CSU kept the offensive momentum in the fifth, totaling four runs on four hits. Allen started the frame with a double before Cook added one of her own two batters later to give the Rams the lead. After a RBI single by Jalyn McGuffin, York hit a two-RBI single off of the short stop to extend the lead, 9-5.
Â
Nevada sent just seven batters to the plate in the final two frames as the Rams' defense locked down forcing four of the six outs into ground outs.
