Colorado State Paired with Front Range Rivals in New Conference Scheduling

Rams will face Wyoming and Air Force each of the next three seasons.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – With the Mountain West abandoning divisional play in 2023, Colorado State has been paired with Wyoming and Air Force as traditional rivals in the new format, meaning the schools will play each other each of the next three years.
Â
The new three-year rotation for scheduling runs from 2023-2025 in conjunction with the remaining years of the league's national television contracts with CBS and Fox, as well as the College Football Playoff agreement, all of which expire in the summer of 2026. It pairs each team with two opponents annually over the course of the plan, playing the other Mountain West schools twice each, one home and one away. The scheduling metric was devised to ensure the top two teams in the conference will play for the championship at the end of the season and also guarantees three teams will not finish with 8-0 records.
Â
Other inputs for the equation were balanced travel in relation to time zones and altitude and historic competitive balance. It also considered teams scheduled in advance to play Hawaii for those who have already scheduled Week O games, as well as teams with Week 0 games at Hawaii so as not to disrupt schooled non-conference games.
Â
Colorado State will host Air Force, Boise State, Nevada, and San Diego State in 2023, with road games against Utah State, Wyoming, Hawaii, and UNLV. In 2024, the Rams host New Mexico, Utah State, Wyoming and San Jose State with road games at Air Force, Boise State, Fresno State and San Diego State. In the final year of the rotation, CSU hosts Air Force, Fresno State, Hawaii and UNLV, playing road games at New Mexico, Wyoming, Nevada and San Jose State.
Â
Colorado State and Wyoming's Border War is the oldest rivalry West of the Mississippi River, a series which dates to 1899 with few interruptions. They have played for the Bronze Boot since 1968.
Â
The Rams first played Air Force in 1957 and have faced each other each year since 1978, the only glitch being the 2020 game canceled due to Covid-19 protocols. They have played for the Ram-Falcon Trophy since 1980.
