Rams receive one first-place vote in tally
LAS VEGAS, Nev.  – As Mountain West Media Days begin, Colorado State has been projected to finish fourth in the Mountain Division by media which covers the league, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Â
Even still, the Rams received one first-place vote from the 28-member voting pool to finish with 90 points. Boise State (14 first-place votes) was tabbed first (151 points), followed by Air Force (10, 136) and defending champion Utah State (3, 122). Wyoming (60) and New Mexico (29) rounded out the division.
Â
Fresno State received 20 first-place votes to finish with 160 points to lead the West, followed by San Diego State (8, 148), San Jose State (105), Nevada (66), UNLV (58) and Hawaii (51).
Â
The Rams are coming off a 3-9Â campaign with a 2-6 mark in Mountain West play, but begin anew under first-year coach Jay Norvell, who was hired as the 24th head coach in program history this past December. A veteran of the Mountain West, he led Nevada to four bowl games in the past five seasons. The change up top comes with a new style of offense, the Air Raid, as well as an attacking defense guided by defensive coordinator Freddie Banks.
Â
Colorado State opens the 2022 slate with a road game on Sept. 3 at Michigan, which played in the College Football Playoff semifinals a season ago, finishing the season ranked third in the country. The Wolverines are likely to be the first ranked team the Rams have faced since No. 20 Boise State in 2019 and the highest-ranked team since facing top-ranked Alabama in 2017. The program has played top-five teams six times in its history.
Â
The home opener is set for Sept. 10 against Middle Tennessee State, one of nine teams the Rams will face which qualified for a bowl game in 2021.
Â
Thursday morning, the Mountain West will announce the preseason all-conference team.
