Next Level Rams: Stonehouse Breaks Near Century-Old NFL Record

In his rookie season, Ryan Stonehouse did what he always does: breaks records
FORT COLLINS, Colo. - In four years as a Ram, all Ryan Stonehouse did was set and re-set the punting record books time and time again. So, when he went undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft before ultimately unseating a long-time NFL starter at his position with the Tennessee Titans, why did anyone expect anything different?
In 1940, 26-year-old quarterback/punter Sammy Baugh set the NFL record for single-season punt average with a mark of 51.4 yards per punt. Over the years, punters have gotten close to breaking Baugh's mark, most notably Shane Lechler's 2009 mark of 51.1. Lechler's 47.6 career average mark is currently the best in NFL history.
Then, in 2022, along came Stonehouse, the FBS career leader in punt average (47.8), the fourth-highest mark in a single-season in FBS history (50.9) and three of the top four single-season marks in Colorado State history (including the top two).Â
Stonehouse's mark - 53.1 - in his first season in Tennessee shattered Baugh's mark by nearly two full yards, led the league by nearly three full yards, and his net average of 44.0 was the fourth-highest mark in the league in 2022.Â

Beyond Stonehouse, a number of Rams also concluded the 2022 season as the regular season came to a close on Sunday.
TE Trey McBride, Arizona Cardinals - In his first season as a pro, McBride saw his role grow consistently over the course of the season. He tallied 29 receptions on 39 targets for 265 yards and one touchdown, averaging 9.1 yards per catch.
WR Michael Gallup, Dallas Cowboys - Gallup returned from injury to become his normal, reliable option in the Cowboys offense. He tallied 39 receptions for 424 yards and four touchdowns in his fifth season in the league. Through five seasons, Gallup has tallied 232 receptions for 3,326 yards and 19 touchdowns - the most by a Rams receiver in the NFL in program history. His 19 touchdowns are tied with Joel Dreessen. The Cowboys travel to Tampa Bay in the Wild Card round.
LB Shaquil Barrett, Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Barrett's 2022 season was cut short with a torn Achilles in late October. He concluded his fourth season in Tampa Bay with 30 tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks, and one forced fumble. His Buccaneers host Gallup's Cowboys in the Wild Card round.
WR Rashard Higgins, Carolina Panthers - Higgins wrapped up his seventh season in the league and the first with the Carolina Panthers after six seasons in Cleveland. He appeared in three games with the Panthers, and his 137 career receptions are the fourth-most by a Rams receiver in program history while his 1,890 yards trail only Gallup.Â
LS Trent Sieg, Las Vegas Raiders - Sieg concluded his fifth season in the NFL where he has been a steady starter at snapper for the Raiders organization. He appeared in all 17 games for the team this season.
FB Adam Prentice, New Orleans Saints - Prentice concluded his second season in New Orleans as the team's primary fullback, appearing in 11 games with two starters. Primarily a blocking back, Prentice tallied nine rushes for three first downs and caught three balls for nine yards. He has appeared in 18 games overall in two seasons in New Orleans.
WR Olabisi Johnson, Minnesota Vikings - After recovering from a torn ACL which caused him to miss the entire 2021 season, Johnson suffered another torn ACL and missed the entire 2022 season as well. He has enjoyed a productive two seasons in Minnesota in 2019 and 2020.
WR Preston Williams, Carolina Panthers - After three season in Miami, Williams spent the majority of 2022 with Carolina. He saw his first action of the season in the season finale on Sunday against New Orleans.
DT Manny Jones, Arizona Cardinals - Jones spent the majority of his rookie season on the Cardinals practice squad but, like McBride, saw his role with the team increase as the season wore on. He concluded his rookie campaign with appearances in four games with six tackles on the year.
