CSU beats Nebraska for first time in 26 tries
LINCOLN, Neb. – The Colorado State women's tennis team and the Nebraska Cornhuskers first met in 1996, the Rams losing their inaugural match 5-2. In every year and matchup since, the Huskers prevailed. Until Friday. The Rams made history, solidly beating the Huskers 7-0 on the road.
Â
CSU has snapped the program's two longest losing streaks in back-to-back years. In 2021-22, the Rams defeated Colorado and now hold a 1-33 overall historical record. Tonight, Sarah Weekley's win at No. 1 singles helped end the 0-25 losing streak against the Huskers.
Â
"I was impressed how each player focused on their job today and executed their game plan so well," head coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "We kept things simple and stayed the course even through tough moments."
Â
The doubles action was strong, starting off the victorious run as Zara Lennon and Ky Ecton won 6-3 at the No. 2 spot. Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya and Sarka Richterova won at No 3, 6-4.
Â
The singles action was where the win was solidified, ending with 10-point final sets. Weekley defeated Nebraska's Zamburek with two 6-3 decisions, her first win at the top spot. Buzkova beat Gallego 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2, Dush won against Danilchenko 6-2, 6-4 in the third spot and Richterova sailed to the first win with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 5.
Â
Lennon pulled through with 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 4, and Luana Avelar won at No. 6 with scores of 7-6 (8-6), and then her foe retired down 3-2.
Â
"This team beat a talented Nebraska team and it's a great feeling to see their hard work pay off," Tran said. "This is a journey, and we will continue to improve, our focus will be to enjoy this moment and get ready for another battle tomorrow.
Â
"I'm so proud of this Ramily."
Â
The Rams will face South Dakota Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
