Colorado State splits day one in California

RIVERSIDE, Cal. – The Colorado State softball team opened up its second weekend of the 2023 season by splitting day one at the Cal Baptist Classic. Falling to Cal State Northridge 6-4 Friday morning, the Rams went on to beat tournament host Cal Baptist, 8-4 at Funk Stadium later Friday afternoon.

In Colorado State's win of the day, an eventual high scoring game didn't start with major offensive production from either team. Both the Rams and the Lancers totaled a combined four hits through the first three innings of play.

The Rams added their first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning off the bat of Kaitlyn Cook. With the bases loaded, Cook reached on a fielding error by the Cal Baptist second baseman, scoring Ashley York from third base. Colorado State would tack on two more runs with the bases loaded after Danielle Serna singled up the middle to score both Peyton Allen and Hailey Smith.

After surrendering a run in the bottom half of the fourth, the Rams rallied back in the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead after York scored Maya Matsubara with a double to left field and Allen scored York directly after. The heart of the order continued to produce runs in the seventh inning with Hailey Smith hitting a three-run home run to score Matsubara and York once again. York and Matsubara would account for six of the ten Ram runs on the day.

The Lancers would add two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, but their comeback would fall short as Jetta Nannen picks up her first win of the season in the circle, pitching through the first four innings, and Serna gets her second save of the season entering in relief.

In game one, both teams once again had a slow offensive start as the score remained 1-0 in favor of CSUN through the fourth inning. The Matadors would add two more runs in the fifth before the Rams added their first run to the board off the bat of Molly Gates. Gates finished 2-3 in game one with one of the Rams' two RBI's.

Colorado State added one run in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't capitalize with bases loaded and fell to the Matadors, 6-2.

Continuing on in the tournament, the Rams will play their final round robin game tomorrow morning versus Pacific before seeds are determined heading into the bracket portion of the weekend. With one win and one loss after day one, the Rams are most likely to play their second game at 4 p.m. again tomorrow. A win in that game would land the Rams a spot in the championship game Sunday at 1:30 p.m., but a loss would put them in the consolation game Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
