Colorado State to Play at Cal Baptist Classic

Rams look to build on successful opening weekend as they travel to California
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State softball team kicked off its 2023 season last weekend at the New Mexico State Invitational and after finishing with a 3-2 record over opening weekend, the Rams will travel to the Cal Baptist Classic in Riverside, California this weekend to compete against Cal State Northridge, Pacific and Cal Baptist in their second non-conference tournament of the season.

Game Notes:
Colorado State will play CSUN at 11 a.m. Friday followed by Cal Baptist at 4 p.m. The Rams will then play Pacific at 11 a.m. Saturday before playing their first of two bracket games at either 4 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The Cal Baptist Classic will round out with the Rams either playing in the championship game at 11 a.m. Sunday or the consolation game at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

What You Need to Know:
- Colorado State will play each of the three teams in a round-robin style schedule before competing in two bracket games to determine a tournament champion. The Rams will start their time in California facing off against CSUN Friday morning at 11 a.m.
- After opening weekend, the Rams sit first in the conference in home runs and slugging percentage, totaling eight long balls as a team last weekend with a .536 slugging average.
- The Rams are the only team entering the tournament with a winning record as they will look to continue to build a non-conference resume.
Scouting the Cal Baptist Classic:
- CSUN finds itself at 2-3 after opening weekend, claiming wins over Memphis and Northern Illinois. Competing at a high level already this season, all three of the Matadors' opening weekend loses came in extra innings, including No. 22 Arizona State and San Diego State, who was ranked No. 2 in the Mountain West preseason poll. Colorado State is 2-16 all-time versus CSUN.
- The Cal Baptist Classic will act as the home opener for the Lancers as they spent their opening weekend in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico going 2-2. Boasting wins over Wisconsin and Maryland, Cal Baptist's offense only totaled six runs throughout the tournament while only allowing eight runs in four low scoring games. The Rams are 1-1 all-time against the Lancers with both of their matchups coming in 2020.
- Pacific is coming off a 0-4 opening weekend, only averaging one run per game after participating in the NorCal Kickoff Tournament. Only hitting .243 as a team, the Rams will look to continue their dominant pitching over the Tigers. Colorado State is 5-7 all-time against Pacific.
Game Notes:
- Transfer Molly Gates had a breakout opening weekend for the Rams as she hit a .556 average during her first weekend in a CSU uniform. Not only did the junior hit a home run in her first at-bat of the season, Gates also led the Rams in slugging percentage at .889 with 10 hits and two home runs in Las Cruces.
- Senior Peyton Allen finished the New Mexico State Invitational as the Ram's top run producer as the infielder totaled 10 RBI's after hitting three home runs during opening weekend. Allen totaled just nine home runs all last season.
- In the circle for Colorado State, junior Sydney Hornbuckle led the team in innings pitched and ERA as the California native recorded 12 innings pitched while only allowing two earned runs. In her first start of the season versus Bradley, she finished with a  career-high 10 strikeouts.
- Four Rams hit over .400 last weekend including Gates, Hailey Smith, Danielle Serna and Maya Matsubara.
