Colorado State Heads South to Play in Texas State Tournament

Rams to play six games against four opponents this weekend

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State softball team heads to San Marcos, Texas for the Texas State Tournament following a 4-1 weekend last week at the Cal Baptist Classic. This weekend's tournament is the third of four non-conference tournaments for the Rams ahead of Mountain West play.
 
What You Need to Know:
  •  Colorado State will play six games against four unique opponents including: UT Arlington, Texas State, Kansas and UTSA. The Rams begin the tournament with a matchup with the Mavericks from UT Arlington.
  • The Rams sit in the top two for team home runs and batting average in the Mountain West, with 11 deep shots on a .328 team batting average.
  • Of the Rams' four opponents they will face, three have winning records to this point in the season and will prove competitive competitions for Colorado State.
 
Scouting the Texas State Tournament
  • UTSA comes into the tournament as the only team with a losing record. The Roadrunners are coming off a win against Incarnate Word, a win that snapped a three-game losing streak.
  • Texas State hosts the tournament with a 6-4 record. Coming off a pair of 3-2 weekends, the Bobcats are hosting their second tournament of the season. Texas State boasts wins over Wichita State, Kent State and Lamar.
  • UT Arlington heads to San Marcos with a 5-4 record including wins over Kentucky, Tulsa and Texas Tech. The Mavricks are winners of two of their last five including a win in their last game against South Dakota.
  • Kansas sits two games over .500 with a 6-4 record and wins over NC State, Ole Miss and Long Beach State. They arrive at the Texas State Tournament on a two-game winning streak.
 
Game Notes:
  • Junior Molly Gates is finding her way on base to this point in the season hitting at a .500 clip including two home runs and a double. Gates leads the Rams hitting percentage and total bases two weeks into the season.
  • Junior first baseman Hailey Smith is one of eight Rams hitting over .300 to start the season. She is tied with senior Danielle Serna for second on the team in batting average at .355.
  • Sydney Hornbuckle has led the Rams in appearances in her junior season holding a 3-2 record including two complete games.
  • Delaney Saugstad leads the Rams in ERA with a 1.80 in 3 appearances. Including a complete game performance in one of her three starts.
 
The Rams first matchup will be against UT Arlington Friday at 12:30 PM before playing Texas State at 5:30 PM. Colorado State will play two more games Saturday against Kansas at 12:30 pm and UTSA at 3pm before finishing up the weekend with games against UTSA at 9 am and Texas State at 11:30 am Sunday.
