Colorado State walks off UT Arlington in game one
SAN MARCOS, Tex. – The Colorado State softball team finished day one at the Texas State Tournament 1-1 after claiming a walk off win over UT-Arlington, 4-3 in game one before falling to Texas State2, 4-1 in game two.
Â
In game one, the Mavericks got off to a hot start scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Rams were quick to answer with one of their own in the bottom half of the first frame. Back-to-back singles from Peyton Allen and Ashley York set up back-to-back walks from Danielle Serna and Maya Matsubara to put the Rams on the board.
Â
UT-Arlington added one more run in the third, but once again the Rams were able to answer right away in the bottom of the inning. This time, a single from Kaitlyn Cook scored both Allen and York once again to tie the game up at three.
Â
Locked at three, Colorado State starting pitcher Jetta Nannen pitched two more scoreless innings to finish the day with five total innings, only allowing four hits. The Rams then entered freshman Delaney Saugstad into the circle to close out the game for CSU. Saugstad threw two perfect innings with three strikeouts to give the Rams a chance to walk-off the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
A leadoff single from York set the Rams up with the winning run only 180 feet away. Due up next for the Rams, outfielder Hailey Smith laid down a bunt with full intention to advance York into scoring position with a sacrifice at bat, but instead, a throwing error by the Mavericks gave York's speed the advantage as the junior scored all the way from first base, winning the game for the Rams 4-3.
Â
In game two versus Texas State, the Rams finished with the same amount of hits as the Bobcats, but couldn't string their hits together as Texas State took a 4-0 lead going into the sixth inning.
Â
Able to avoid the shutout and bring one run across the board in the seventh, back-to-back hits from Cook and Sydney Hornbuckle once again followed by back-to-back walks from Molly Gates and Allen brought in a run for the Rams. Matsubara finished the game with two hits and both Allen and York hit doubles in the 4-1 loss.
Â
The Rams will continue their time in San Marcos tomorrow as they play Kansas at 12:30 p.m. and UT San Antonio directly afterwards at approximately 3 p.m.
