Rams top Roadrunner, fall to Bobcats
SAN MARCOS, Tex. – The Colorado State softball team finished up its time at the Texas State Invitational Sunday morning as the Rams went 1-1 for the third consecutive day, beating UT San Antonio, 3-2 and falling to host team Texas State, 4-3.
Â
In game one, the second matchup of the weekend between the Rams and Roadrunners, the contest got out to a similar start compared to yesterday's matchup. UTSA was able to score two runs in the first inning to gain an early lead.
Â
With Colorado State's offense able to score in the third inning and two more times in the sixth inning, the Rams defense was on lockdown and didn't allow any more Roadrunner runs through the rest of the game.
Â
In the third, Colorado State scored off of back-to-back hits from Jayln McGuffin and Molly Gates followed by Morgan Coleman, a pinch runner entered for McGuffin, scoring on a UTSA wild pitch. The Rams tied the game and took the lead in the sixth inning as Ashley York singled to lead off the inning followed by Danielle Serna and Jordan West hitting back-to-back doubles for the Rams in order to send ace pitcher Sydney Hornbuckle back into the seventh inning with the lead.
Â
Hornbuckle, who entered in relief for starter Giselle Bentley in the third inning, threw four and a thirds innings allowing zero hits and recording two strikeouts. She retired the Roadrunners in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win for the Rams.
Â
In game two of the day, Colorado State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, but unfortunately for the Rams, the second frame would be the only inning they were able to score runs. Texas State added one run in the third inning and three more in the fifth inning to seal a victory on its home field by a one run margin.
Â
Sophomore Brooke Bohlender notched two out the three RBIs for the Rams in the second inning with a home run to left field while six different Rams recorded hits throughout the game for CSU.
Â
Colorado State will leave the Texas State Invitational going 3-3 on the weekend and head into a bye week. The Rams will return for one final non-conference tournament weekend at Grand Canyon University from March 10-12 before starting Mountain West action at home March 17 against San Diego State.
