Colorado State totals two wins on day one of the GCU Invitational
PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Colorado State softball team began the GCU Invitational 2-0 after beating Abilene Christian and Grand Canyon University Friday afternoon in Phoenix. The Rams beat the Wildcats by a score of 7-0 and took the win over the Lopes, 4-3.
Â
In game one, the Rams' pitching combination of Jetta Nannen and Danielle Serna combined for a seven-inning shutout, only allowing five hits to the Abilene Christian offense. With two strikeouts each, Nannen got the start going four full innings with Serna tallying the win after pitching three innings.
ÂÂÂ
On the offensive side of the ball, it was all Colorado State. Scoring a run in the opening frame, the Rams got out to an early lead thanks to a Hailey Smith sacrifice fly which scored Peyton Allen from third. The top of the order would continue to produce for Colorado State in the third when Allen homered to left field and Smith brought in her second RBI of the game, scoring Ashley York on a double to left center.
Â
The Rams would keep their foot on the gas throughout the whole game, scoring four more runs in the sixth inning including another home run from Allen. As the home team, Colorado State would finish with seven runs on nine hits through just six innings at the plate.
Â
In game two, the Rams faced a 22-2 GCU team and pitching staff that was not used to surrendering runs. Setting the tone from the start, Colorado State scored once again in the first inning via the sacrifice fly. This time York scored teammate Molly Gates to take an early 1-0 lead.
Â
The Lopes responded immediately in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own. GCU would also add another run in the fourth inning, leaving the Rams at a two run deficit heading into the fifth.
Â
Once again it was the top of the order for Colorado State that was able to piece together three fifth inning runs. Gates got things started with a one-out single followed by a single from Allen. With a double steal in place, Colorado State had runners at the second and third with only one away. York put the ball in play, reaching on an overthrow by the GCU second baseman with both Gates and Allen coming in to score on the error. Smith later brought in York on a single to left field, claiming the lead for the Rams.
Â
Following the rally, Head Coach Jen Fisher entered Serna back into the circle for the Rams, looking for the save. Serna would cap the day off for Colorado State pitching three innings without allowing a single hit through 13 batters faced. The Rams would go on to hand GCU only its third loss of the season by a score of 4-3.
Â
Colorado State will play both teams again tomorrow in a double header beginning with Abilene Christian at 10 a.m. and GCU again at 12:30 p.m.
