Colorado State to face Grand Canyon and Abilene Christian
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State softball team will travel to Grand Canyon University March 10-12 as the team finishes up its non-conference tournament season before its home and conference opener next weekend. The Rams will play five games in Phoenix, two versus GCU and three versus Abilene Christian.
Â
In this three-team tournament, Colorado State will open up play against Abilene Christian Friday at 10 a.m. before playing GCU at 3 p.m. later that day. Saturday, the Rams will face the Wildcats again at 10 a.m. and the Lopes directly after at approximately 12:30 p.m. while Sunday wraps up with one more matchup against Abilene Christian at 11 a.m.
Â
Coming off a bye weekend, the Rams currently sit third in the conference in both team hitting efficiency and pitching efficiency. With a .292 team batting average and team 3.31 ERA, Colorado State looks to continue a strong pre-season in their final tournament weekend at GCU. As a team, the Rams have efficiently put the ball into play all season, ranking first in the Mountain West with the lowest number of strikeouts recorded at the plate this season at 61.
Â
Before the bye weekend, Colorado State finished 3-3 at the Texas State Invitational with two wins over UTSA and a win over UT Arlington. Leading the way for the Rams was shortstop Maya Matsubara who finished the weekend hitting .500 (6-12), becoming the leading hitter on the season for the Rams before the weekend was over.
Â
Looking ahead, Grand Canyon brings a 21-2 record into their own invitational with its only two losses come from a ranked Washington team and Oregon State. With a team ERA of 1.68, the GCU pitching staff will be the biggest challenge towards the Rams' slugging offense.
Â
Abilene Christian enters the weekend with a 6-15 overall record giving up over six runs on average to their opponents. Colorado State is 5-1 this season when scoring six runs or more. The Rams will play the Wildcats three times this weekend, acting similar to a regular-season three-game series, which the Rams will play for the remainder of the season after their time at GCU wraps up.
