Colorado State defeats Abilene Christian in game one, falls to GCU in game two

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Returning for day two of the GCU Invitational, the Colorado State softball team once again faced off against the Wildcats from Abilene Christian and the host team Grand Canyon Lopes in a double header Saturday morning.

The Rams would score double-digit runs for the second time this season in game one against ACU, defeating the Wildcats by a score of 12-5 before falling to the Lopes in game two, 8-3.

Colorado State recorded 11 hits in game one of the day, including three-hit games from both Ashley York and Hailey Smith. York and Smith totaled two and four RBIs respectively as the Rams scored eight runs in the second inning to gain a lead they would not relinquish.

Other key hitters a part of the Rams offense include Danielle Serna and Brooke Bohlender who both finished the game with three RBIs with Serna going 2-3. All nine positions in the batting order reached base and scored for the Rams in a 12-5 game one win over Abilene Christian.

Freshman Giselle Bentley would go the full seven innings in the circle for the win with four strikeouts and only allowing four hits.

In game two, Colorado State found themselves in another close-score pitching duel with GCU as Sydney Hornbuckle got the start in the circle. With things scoreless going into the bottom of the third, the Lopes scored first to take a 2-0 lead. In the next inning, a Kaitlyn Cook double off the right field wall would score pinch runner Morgan Coleman and Maya Matsubara to tie things up at two each.

From there, GCU would score six runs across two innings in the fifth and sixth to put the game out of reach for the Rams.

Serna had another multiple-hit game against GCU as she went 2-4 in game two as well as teammate Matsubara hitting 2-3 and scoring a run.

Colorado State will finish its final game at the GCU Invitational tomorrow as they face Abilene Christian for the third time this weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. from Phoenix.
