CSU falls to Fresno State in conference opener
FRESNO, Cali. – Facing the reigning Mountain West regular-season champions, Colorado State's No. 42 women's tennis team dropped a battle of ranked foes to open conference play, with No. 67 Fresno State earning a 4-0 decision.
Â
"I was very pleased with our week of practice and preparation coming into this match," head coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "They responded well to the conditions and challenges."
Â
The day began with Bulldogs clenching the doubles point. Nos. 2 Ky Ecton and Zara Lennon were beat by Cristina Flaquer and Mariya Vyshkina of Fresno State 6-4, while Sarka Richterova and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya had a close match but ultimately lost to Carlotta Nonnis Marzano and Carolina Piferi 7-6 (4) at No. 3. The Rams' top tandem of Radka Buzkova and Emily Dush fell just short of a victory, leading 6-5 against Pang Jittakoat, who was the 2022 Mountain West Player of the Year, and her partner Matilde Magrini, when the point was decided.
Â
"They competed well and left it all out on the court," Tran said. "That's all I could ask for."
Â
In singles, Buzkova lost to Jittakoat 6-4, 6-2, Richterova fell to Vyshkina 6-2, 6-4 and Sarah Weekley was defeated by Piferi 7-6 (6), 6-2 to clinch the dual. Lennon, Dush, and Luana Avelar all ended their singles play unfinished. Lennon played Matilde (1-6, 6-3, 2-1); Dush played Flaquer (6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 1-0); and Avelar went against Nonnis Marzano (6-7 (8), 2-2).
Â
"I'm proud of who we are and how we respond to a tough loss like this," Tran said. "Fresno State played very well, and they were better than us today, credit to them."
Â
The Rams conclude the weekend with a match Saturday against Wyoming, beginning at 11 a.m.
