Rams Fall to New Mexico 12-4

One bad inning not enough to overcome for Colorado State

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –  The Colorado State softball team dropped game two in its two-game series against New Mexico Sunday afternoon as the Rams fell to the Lobos 12-4 in six innings.

Coming off yesterday's 10-1 five-inning win over the Lobos, the Rams were looking for the series sweep in Albuquerque Sunday. In similar fashion to how a seven-run inning propelled the Rams to victory in Saturday's win over New Mexico, a seven-run inning was the demise of Colorado State in Sunday's matchup.

The Lobos were able to get on the board first in the first inning after New Mexico loaded the bases, drawing three straight walks and scored its first run on a fielder's choice. The Rams returned the run in the third inning with a solo home run by Molly Gates. With her third home run of the season, Gates tied things up 1-1.

The bottom half of the third inning is where the Rams saw an uproar in the Lobos' bats as seven runs came across in the bottom of the third for New Mexico, including six hits a walk and two hit by pitches as the Rams made two different pitching changes in the third inning.

After a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, the Rams were looking to cut into the Lobos lead and were able to notch two runs in the top of the fifth inning thanks to hits from both Gates and Peyton Allen, as well as a sacrifice fly from Ashley York. New Mexico, not going away, scored two more runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth.

In the sixth inning, Gates recorded her second RBI of the day as Colorado State was able to plate one more run. Gates scored senior McKenna Mcvay from third base who was pinch running for fellow senior Kaitlyn Cook who reached on an infield single.

In the bottom half of the frame, the Lobos returned the run rule favor that the Rams were able to issue them Saturday by walking off the game in six innings with a two-run double to make the final score 12-4, New Mexico.

Gates would finish the day going 3-4 while five other Rams also totaled at least one hit.

Colorado State will now look forward to their last non-conference matchups of the season as the team travels to Ames, Iowa for a four-game weekend against Iowa State.
