Rams Sweep Doubleheader versus Iowa State

Colorado State comes back in extra inning win before a dominant victory in game two

AMES, Iowa – The Colorado State softball team won both games in a doubleheader against the Iowa State Cyclones on the road in Ames, Iowa Friday afternoon. The Rams came down from behind in a game one, extra inning 7-5 victory before dominating the Cyclones at the plate in game two, winning by a score of 9-6.

In game one, Iowa State struck first with three runs in the first inning and from the jump it looked like the Cyclones had the home field advantage on a cold and windy midwestern day. Not gaining much momentum in its first time through the lineup, the Colorado State offense got a boost off the bat of junior Ashley York as on the second time through the lineup, the leadoff hitter hit a home run to lead off the third inning.

Already leading 3-1, Iowa State gained two more insurance runs in the sixth inning after earning bases loaded, Milaysia Ochoa drove in two more RBI for the Cyclones to put the Rams at a four-run deficit.

The Rams, down to their final at bats, approached the top of the seventh with nothing to lose as leadoff hitter McKenna McVay started out the inning by reaching and advancing to second base on a throwing error by the Cyclones before the top of the order in York would draw a walk. Scoring started in the seventh with a Maya Matsubara double as the junior scored McVay from third. Another hit by junior Haley Smith scored York from third base putting the Iowa State lead at only two with one out in the top of the seventh.

In Colorado State's next at bat, senior Peyton Allen would put the ball in play and reach on a fielder's choice to score Matsubara from third while Smith was thrown out at second for the second out. Down to their final out, Head Coach Jen Fisher took a risk and put the steel sign on for Allen, who was able to successfully steal second and put herself into scoring position as the tying run.

With junior Molly gates up the plate, a dropped third strike showed the subtlest sign of hope for the Rams as Gates ran down to first base and the Iowa State catcher committed a throwing error allowing not only Gates to reach base, but Allen to score all the way from second, tying the game at five.

Returning on defense in the bottom of the seventh, senior pitcher Julia Cabral pitched a one-two-three seventh inning to extend the game into extras.

In the eighth, senior Kaitlyn Cook started things off with a single and another Cyclones error put runners on first and second with no outs as McVay reached for a third time. After catcher Jalyn McGuffin was successfully able to lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance Cook and McVay into scoring position at second and third, a Ram strike out notched the second out of the inning.

Matsubara stepped into the batter's box hoping to not let a golden opportunity slide and delivered a two-out, two-RBI hit to center field to put the Rams up 7-5.

Looking to close the door and move on to game two, Cabral entered the circle in the bottom of the eighth and once again pitched a one-two-three inning using only five pitches and sealing the win.

In game two, the Colorado State bats were on fire from the start as York launched her second home run of the day in the opening at bat for the Rams. Later in the first inning, Allen would also go yards to hit her 11th home run of the season and give the Rams an early 2-0 lead after the first frame.

After Iowa State responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first, the Rams came back in the second inning determined to keep their momentum. Gates led off the second inning with a hit, and it was all the spark the Rams needed to have a four-hit, three-run inning, including a two-RBI double from Allen.

The Cyclones, not going away, scored another run in the bottom of the second thanks to a Sarah Tyree solo homerun to make the score 5-3.

Continuing to want to make a statement after batting through the order in the second inning, Gates led off the third inning again with a hit to kickstart a five-hit, four-run inning for the Rams with RBI from Cook and another two-RBI double from Allen.

Senior Danielle Serna would keep Iowa State's offense scoreless through the next couple innings as the pitcher finished her game two appearance going four and a third innings, only allowing four hits in 19 batters faced with two strike outs. She would hand the ball back to Sydney Hornbuckle, the game one starting pitcher to close out the game for Colorado State

Iowa State would go on to score two runs in the fifth and one more in the seventh, but a 14-hit day from the Rams was too much to overcome as Colorado State prevailed in game two, 9-6.

Colorado State finished the day with three big sluggers from the plate, including Ashley York, who went 4-8 with two home runs and two RBI over both games. Allen finished the day 3-10 with six RBI, two doubles and a home run, and Matsubara finished the day 5-10 with four RBI and two doubles.

The Rams will close out their time in the Midwest facing Iowa State again in the second doubleheader of the series Saturday morning starting at 11 a.m.
