Rams Drop Both Games in Doubleheader Against Iowa State

4/22/2023 5:41:00 PM | Softball

Colorado State struggles at the plate to end 2-2 on the weekend

AMES, Iowa – The Colorado State softball team fell to Iowa State in both games of a doubleheader on a cold, rainy Saturday afternoon in Iowa. In game one, the Rams were unable to get their offense going, falling by a score of 8-0 in six innings before dropping the second game by a score of 6-2.

In game one, the Rams started out with an early 4-0 deficit after the Cyclones were able to drive in four runs in the first inning of the first game which was pushed back an hour due to the temperature and precipitation in Ames.

The biggest storyline throughout the game one loss would be the number of Rams that were left on base during the six-inning shutout. Colorado State left nine runners on base throughout the six inning loss, including in the fifth inning stranding the bases loaded and being unable to produce any runs in the sixth inning after the Rams earned runners at the corners with no outs.

Heading into the bottom of the six, the Cyclones only needed two runs to run-rule the Rams, and they were successfully able to do so thanks to a leadoff home run by Alesia Ranches, a double and a Colorado State throwing error, which gave Iowa State the walk off win in game one.

In game two, the Rams' bats were able to wake up after a shutout with two hits in the opening frame of the ball game, but Iowa State was still able to score first as the Cyclones were able to bring one run across in the second inning.

Tying things up in the next frame, the Rams were able to notch their first run of the day with a Molly Gates RBI double to right center field, which scored teammate Maya Matsubara all the way from first base who was able to reach on a hit by pitch in the previous at-bat.

Colorado State would score its second run of the game in the fourth inning off a Hailey Smith home run to center field. Smith's long ball was her eleventh of the season, putting her back into a tie for first place in the Mountain West Conference.

Facing only a one run deficit heading into the sixth inning, Iowa State was once again able to find its stride with the use of the long ball. Two home runs in the six innings for the Cyclones brought in three total runs as Iowa State was able to return to the top of the seventh inning on defense and keep the Rams off the board en route to a 6-2 final score in game two.

Both Gates and Smith finished game two with two hits each.

The Rams will return to action again next weekend as they host their final home series of this season against Fresno State April 28-30 at Ram Field.
