Rams Fall to Spartans in Series Opener

The Spartans got out to an early lead thanks to a leadoff home run by third baseman Alyssa Graham in the first at bat of the game for San Jose State. Scoring once more in the opening frame, the Spartans took an early 2-0 lead.

The Mountain West leading offense answered back in the top of the second as the Rams scored three runs in the second frame thanks to Molly Gates drawing a two-out walk with the bases loaded right before Peyton Allen singled to left field to score Morgan Crosby and Kaitlyn Cook.

Entering the third inning, the long ball struck again in favor of the Spartans as San Jose State regained the lead off a two-run home run from pitcher Jenessa Ullegue to take a 4-3 lead. The Spartans would then add a needed insurance run in the fifth inning as Ullegue tallied her third RBI of the game with a single to left field.

Allen, looking to match Ullegue's three RBI, batted in McKenna McVay in the sixth inning for the Rams to pull Colorado State within one run. Allen would finish the night going 2-4.

Going into Colorado State's last at-bats, the Rams loaded the bases with no outs after the inning started with a single to left field from Hailey Smith. A walk drawn by Danielle Serna and an infield single from Maya Matsubara put the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position for Colorado State, but three consecutive outs within the infield held the Rams off the board and sealed the win for the Spartans.

Colorado State will play in game two of the three-game series tomorrow at 5 p.m. mountain time.
