Colorado State puts up seven-run fifth inning to defeat San Jose State in five innings
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Colorado State softball team bounced back after a Thursday night loss to beat the San Jose State Spartans Friday afternoon in run-rule fashion. The Rams beat the Spartans 10-2 in five innings after plating seven runs in the top of the fifth.

Colorado State's offense was hot from the start of the game as junior Molly Gates started the game with a leadoff triple down the right field line. In the next at-bat for the Rams, senior Peyton Allen blasted her tenth home run of the season to give the Rams a 2-0 lead in just two at-bats so far in the game.

The Spartans responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning.
Â
Looking to keep momentum on their side, the Rams added a run in the second inning off the bat of Gates as she scored Kaitlyn Cook to take a 3-1 Colorado State lead.

Rams' starting pitcher Julia Cabral, who is still working her way back into the rotation after an injury kept her out for the majority of the season so far, reentered the circle to pitch a one-two-three bottom of the second. Cabral would finish the game with her best performance so far this season going four innings pitched only allowing two hits and one earned run.

After a scoreless third and fourth inning for both teams, Colorado State started to break open the score in the fifth with five consecutive hits including three consecutive extra-base hits. Allen started things off with a single to left field before Ashley York matched her single with a hit to center field. The next batter, Hailey Smith, fought in a long at-bat until she was able to drive a ball into the left center gap, scoring York.

Senior Danielle Serna kept the extra-base hits going with another double directly following Smith's while sophomore Maya Matsubara hit the second triple of the game for the Rams right after Serna to clear the bases and put the Rams up 7-1.

After a Kaitlyn Cook drawn walk and a Jalyn McGuffin single, the Spartans finally got their first out of the inning of a sacrifice fly by Molly Gates. Nonetheless, Gates scored Cook from third on the sac fly.

The inning would be wrapped up with another Peyton Allen single to score McGuffin, Allen's second hit of the inning. The second baseman would finish the day hitting 3-4 with three RBI and a home run, putting her once again tied for the lead in the conference with teammate Hailey Smith.

The Rams entered pitcher Jetta Nannen into the circle to close things out in the bottom of the fifth as the Rams ran away with a run-rule win.

Colorado State will play the rubber match in the series finale against the Spartans Saturday at 1 p.m. mountain time.
