Richterova roars back to give team a chance
LARAMIE, Wyo. – Wanting to bounce back from a sub-par performance the day before, Colorado State's women's tennis team put up a fight on Saturday afternoon at the Wyoming Tennis Complex, but ultimately feel short to UNLV in a 4-3 decision in a contest which lasted just short of 5 hours.
Â
The loss drops the No. 61 Rams to 13-6 on the season, 2-4 in Mountain West play. UNLV improved to 12-3, 4-2.
Â
"We had a tough weekend in terms of results," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "There are definitely some areas we need to improve on going into another round of matches next week. We need to be more disciplined and willing to do whatever it takes to win. We have faced some adversity, but I'm proud of how we embrace it and overcome it."
Â
With the match tied at 3-all, the No. 5 line was left on the court to decide the affair, with UNLV's Coco Zhao pulling out a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 decision over Viktoryia Zhadzinkskaya.
Â
It was Sarka Richterova at No. 3 who gave the Rams a fighting chance with an amazing three-set victory.
Â
UNLV took the early advantage with the doubles point, winning at the top two spots. The Rebels pushed the advantage to 2-0 with a win at No. 4 singles in straight sets before Colorado State finally put a point on the board.
Â
At the top singles spot, Radka Buzkova beat Molly Helgesson in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (2). The Rams then tied the match when Zara Lennon remained unbeaten in three-setters, pulling out a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 decision over Zita Kovacs. It was the seventh three-set victory for the junior this season, just the second after prevailing in the opening set.
Â
Putting fuel to the comeback was Richterova, winning a three-set match against Salsa Aher in dramatic fashion. After dropping the first set 6-3, she came back with a 6-3 victory, then fell behind 5-1 in the third set. She rallied all the way back to tie the set at 5, then worked her way into a tiebreak, which she won 7-6 (6).
Â
"Sarka showed a lot of grit and determination to win that match," Tran said. "She bounced back from yesterday and kept grinding away. I'm so proud of the way she competed and believed in herself."
Â
Colorado State, now 0-4 on the road in conference play, heads to Boise, Idaho., next weekend to face Utah State on Saturday (10 a.m.), then host Boise State on Sunday (2 p.m.)
