Moss lands invite to Hula Bowl

When a player shows a knack for fireworks, an offensive coach tries to light the fuse as often as possible in as many ways as possible.

Caleb Goodie is becoming one of those guys for the Colorado State football team.

"Whenever we see a guy who has a talent for something, we try to utilize it in a game. We don't always get it in at once, but as the season goes on it gives you opportunities to put guys in position," CSU coach Jay Norvell said. "Caleb is an explosive guy. I think our receiving group is starting to emerge, and some of their talents are starting to show more. He's a fun guy to make plays for because he's super explosive."

Of his 23 touches this season (18 receptions, five rushes), he has produced seven explosive plays – or basically 30 percent of the time the Rams give it to him.  The sophomore is averaging 17.4 yards per carry (with a long rush of 46 yards) and 20.9 yards per reception with four touchdowns.

He's impressing the coaches with everything he does, from his performance on special teams, the detail he shows at practice, even the classroom, where he's carrying a 3.60 GPA.

Big plays are becoming a theme for him, a reputation he wants.

"My mentality is whenever I get the opportunity is to show out, because you don't get too many in college. You maybe get one, or maybe get two in a game, so do the best you can, "I pretty much get excited. I know it's time to lock in and do my job. That's pretty much what I try to bring. When I catch the ball, I want to do something big, make an explosive play and help the team by helping us get in a good field advantage."

The speedster out of Breaux Bridge, La., is currently in a four-game streak with at least one explosive play. It started at Air Force with his sensational one-handed grab he turned into an 85-yard score, reaching 100 yards receiving in a game for the first time. He has at least one explosive catch in five games this season, two games with explosive runs.

His freshman season, he had one catch for -1 yard in eight games. In spring camp, it became apparent he was earning  more of a role, practice habits which not only carried over into fall, but even improved. He's a different player, propped up the plays he's made and the confidence he's developed.

"It has improved a lot. I'm more comfortable now," Goodie said. "I feel I'm one of the best. It's just stacking days and games together."

Here and There

Fresno State interim head coach Tim Skipper was an assistant head coach and linebackers coach at Colorado State under Jim McElwain. He took over the Bulldogs when Jeff Tedford stepped down in July. … This will be the first game this year where Colorado State is facing a team coming off a bye when the Rams didn't also have a bye week. … Bulldogs' quarterback Mikey Keene is second in the conference averaging 248.7 yards per game, throwing 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. … Norvell is hopeful a few regulars are healthy enough to play this week, including Jack Howell. At this point of the season, he said it's always a game-day type decision.
