Rams Drop Doubleheader to Aztecs

Colorado State falls on the road to San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Colorado State softball team dropped both games of the Thursday doubleheader to the San Diego State Aztecs, falling in game one, 3-1 before falling in game two, 7-6.

Game one featured a low scoring pitcher's duel between Colorado State starter Sydney Hornbuckle and the combination of Allie Light and Cece Cellura for the Aztecs. Hornbuckle pitched a complete game loss, only allowing five hits in six innings with one strikeout in 28 batters faced.

From the plate, the Rams struggled to hit against the former Mountain West Pitcher of the Year in Light, who threw four innings for the win with four strikeouts and only one hit allowed before turning the circle over to Cellura who threw three innings with two strikeouts and only one hit allowed.

Senior centerfielder Ashley York was the only Ram to record a hit in game one, claiming both CSU hits with two singles.

In game two, Light started the game once again for the Aztecs. While San Diego State brought one run across in the bottom of the first, the Rams were able to adjust to Light and take and early lead in the top of the third inning. Maya Matsubara earned the first RBI of the game when she scored Jailey Wilson and Morgan Crosby on an infield single. Crosby's head's up base running with two outs brought the second run across for the 2-1 lead.

The Rams tacked on another run in the fourth inning, this time off the bat of senior Molly Gates. Gates scored Danielle Serna from third base with an RBI single after Serna reached on a lead off triple to start the inning.

While the Aztecs responded with two runs of their own to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth, Matsubara plated another run for the Rams with a triple of her own, scoring Wilson once again. In the next at-bat, Peyton Allen scored Matsubara with a hard single up the middle to put the lead back to two for the Rams, 5-3.

But it was the late game surge that Colorado State just can't seem to contain during Mountain West play that allowed San Diego State to notch four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and retake the lead, 7-5. The Rams would score one more run in the top of the seventh when York came around to score on a wild pitch, but the comeback fell short for Colorado State, falling in game two 7-6.

Colorado State will face San Diego State once more Friday night at 7 p.m. mountain time for the final game of the series.
