Rams Sweep Utah State with Dominant Run-Rule Win

Colorado State has won via run rule in four of past five games

LOGAN, Utah - The Colorado State softball team left Logan, Utah with three wins Sunday afternoon after winning its fifth consecutive game and second via the run rule, defeating the Aggies 14-3.

A five RBI day thanks to three home runs from freshman Jailey Wilson wasn't the only thing going for the Rams on a sunny Sunday afternoon, but Colorado State put up 19 hits on Utah State in the series finale game with every Ram who took an at bat, recorded a hit.

The scoring began in the first inning when after a leadoff triple from Ashley York, Maya Matsubara scored York with a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Aggies responded in the second inning with two runs off of starting pitcher Sydney Hornbuckle, who Utah State saw six innings of Friday night. Despite the familiarity, Hornbuckle dominated the circle while her offense dominated the plate.

The flood gates opened in the second inning for the Rams when Hailey Smith and Hornbuckle both reached with a single. Brooke Bohlender scored Morgan Crosby, who ran for Smith to tie the game at two. Then, Wilson hit her first home run of the day, a three-run moon shot to center field which extended the lead to 5-2.

RBI singles from Matsubara and Molly Gates extended the lead to 8-2 by the end of the inning.

After her team put up seven runs in the top half of the second, Hornbuckle responded with a one-two-three inning in the bottom half of the frame.

The next inning hosted another home run from Wilson, this time a solo shot to right field to start the inning. After another single from both York and Matsubara, Peyton Allen hit her second triple of the weekend to bring in two more runs. With only one out, a Gates double scored Allen while another hit from Smith scored Katelyn Hornbuckle, who ran after a Danielle Serna infield single. The lead was now double digits at 13-2.

Hornbuckle through another scoreless inning in the bottom half of the third, efficiently holding her team in run-rule range.

While the scoring dipped off in the later half of the game, Wilson's bat stayed hot. With her third home run of the day, a pitch down the middle ended up over the center field fence in another no-doubter. The lead was at 14-2 and while Utah State tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning, Colorado State held off the Aggie comeback for the third consecutive day.

The Rams will return home to host San Jose State next weekend from Ram Field with the three-game series set for April 19-21 kicking off Friday at 6 p.m. for the first night game of the season in Fort Collins.
