League announces preseason team and predicted order of finish

LAS VEGAS – Ahead of the 2024 Mountain West Media Days in Las Vegas, the league announced its Preseason All-Mountain West team with Colorado State earning four spots on the list. Tory Horton, Jacob Gardner, Chase Wilson and Jack Howell were named to the 28-member squad.

Horton, a 2023 All-Mountain West first team member, finished the 2023 season leading the Rams with 1,136 yards on 96 receptions with eight touchdowns. The wideout tallied four games with 100-plus yards, including a 227-yard performance against Utah Tech – seventh most in program history – with three scores. His total yards ranked No. 8 and receptions tied second most in program history.

Howell, a 2023 All-Mountain West first team member, led the Rams' secondary and defense the 2023 as the second-leading tackler in the Mountain West with 114 tackles and 9.5 per game. He totaled 50 solo stops with a season-high eight at Wyoming. He also recorded five games with double-figure tackles and a season-high 16 in the season opener against Washington State.

Gardner has been the anchor on the Rams' Moving Co., earning All-Mountain West second team honors a season ago. The graduate has started every game of his college career, starting 45 games heading into the season. The center led an offense in 2023 that produced nearly 400 yards per game and allowed the No. 17 fewest sacks.

Wilson lands on the preseason list for the first time in his career after being named to the All-Mountain West second team in 2023. The starting linebacker totaled 107 stops and 44 solo a season ago to finish as the Rams' second leading tackler. The redshirt senior added 8.5 sacks and 3.5 TFL – the most in both categories behind the defensive line.

Colorado State was picked to finish fifth in the 12-team league, gathering 337 points from the 46 pollers. Boise State was picked to win the league for the second-consecutive year, landing 38 first-place votes and 543 overall. UNLV and Fresno State followed with four first-place votes each and 471 and 460 points, respectively. Air Force was voted fourth ahead of the Rams with 384 total points and CSU capped the top five.
