The Shadows of October

Rams keep their win streak alive on Volloween night

Staying strong might be the last hurdle.

With seven games left until the Mountain West Tournament and October play now a thing of the past, Colorado State Volleyball added to its win streak while costume-clad fans filled the stands in a 3-0 (25-13; 25-13; 25-11) win. This Volloween had a similar outcome of last years, just this time with a largely new roster.

Similar suspects saw the floor while ghoulish figures watched on. The lethal combo of Maria Brun, Halle Jameson and Riley Simpson made their mark as the three are working together more and more.

"It's really fun," Jameson said. "I just feel like we have a lot of trust in each other. And when I'm back row, I know Maria and Riley are up there and they're going to get a lot of kills. So, I want to get them a pass. And then when Maria's back row, I know she's going to perform for me. I just think we have a lot of trust in each other. And it's good that we have so many different options of attackers."

The three finished with 24 kills between them—Brun leading the way with 10 kills and three blocks, while Jameson and Simpson chipped in seven each as the offense spread the wealth.

And when things went well in the first set and the sugar high started hitting, coach Emily Kohan tried out some different combinations. Setter Zosia Szczotkiewicz saw some time on the court as well as Jazen DeBina who got two kills and block by the end of the night.

The starters cheering on the sidelines was yet another sign of unity among the roster.

"Yeah, the team really loves each other," Kohan said. "You'll watch the bench celebrations, and I think it shows that they're celebrating for their teammates that are out on the court doing some of those things. And regardless of what the lineup is, I think our team is stuck together. One of our core values is unity, and we have stayed as a unit throughout the season."

As the unit grows stronger, they had room for few tricks up the sleeve. One was Erin Debiec's tips and dump balls at the net.

When you have a game manager like her, there's room for a little creativity and spontaneity. It's like the eyes in the back of her head made their appearance.

"Erin is a very smart player," Eve Wilson said. "She's so fun to play with. She's always two steps ahead, so she's very smart. Especially when she gets both of our hitters going."

Wilson ended with three blocks and five kills, part of an all-around effort that saw five Rams notch at least five kills.

Defensively, the Rams were just as dominant. Fresno State finished with only 18 kills, and nearly every CSU player recorded at least one dig. The offensive balance and defensive control painted a sharp contrast to the team that took the court just a month ago.

"This is our last game in October, so our pre-game speech was to get better in October," Kohan said. "I think for a lot of teams, October is hard, and you just kind of survive through it. So I thought that was great that if you look at our New Mexico game, which was our first October game, to now, we've gotten a lot better in a lot of different ways."

The numbers speak for themselves.

In the last five games CSU has won, none have gone to five sets and the last two have been sweeps. This month, finishing strong remains a dominant theme.

"It's just knowing we have to keep playing hard and not give them a chance to come back in," Jameson said. "Because, when you're playing really hard teams, if you give them an inch of room, they're going to come back and fight against you. So you have to fight the whole game and be ready the whole time."

For this team, it goes back to the unity they sought at the beginning of the season.

And that bond is starting to show up in more than just words. The way they celebrate each other, fill the gaps on defense and lift the energy from the bench reflects a team finally clicking in all phases. The Rams aren't just playing well—they're enjoying it.

"I want them to be competitive," Kohan said. "I want them to enjoy it, but you also want them to smile through this, right? They're still 18- to 22-year-old kids, if we're going to call them that. And so I think they do enjoy it. I mean, they're here to play volleyball, and they're competitive and want to win.

"But, yeah, they're smiling a lot of the time."

Now, those smiles meet their toughest test yet one game from now: Utah State.

The Aggies remain undefeated in conference play and swept the Rams the last time they met. But as October turns to November, CSU's cohesion and confidence seem to be peaking at just the right time.

There's one more box to check, and this team knows it.

"We're definitely not satisfied," Wilson said. "And I think kind of the same thing with the Wyoming game; we have some revenge still. So we have a lot of work to do for this team, so we'll come back and win."

The road ahead is tougher, the nights a little colder and the stakes a little higher. But that doesn't seem to scare them. The Rams have already weathered the shadows of October—now, they're chasing something brighter.
