Monday Presser: Action, Reaction and Resets

Music selection takes a different turn

Having taken note himself, he made sure the team did as well.

On the opening kickoff of the second half, Colorado State gunner Justin Marshall sprints down the field and is quick to the action, drawing a holding flag on UNLV which now has to start its drive inside its own 10 yard line. The Rebels went three-and-out, Javion Kinnard peels off a good return, and the Rams start a drive inside UNLV territory.

Action and reaction. CSU interim coach Tyson Summers says people call it playing complimentary football, but the same thing. Do something good, something good can come from it. Same is true in the opposite direction.

He started Monday by showing examples to his staff, then to his team. Discussion ensues.

"I just spent a lot of time this morning with them, you know, trying to reset," he said as his Monday presser. "Again, their hearts and trying to make sure they understood that their actions and they're going to be reactions to those things. It's our opportunity to continue to put together good film and do something great. And so, one foot in front of the other. I thought they had a really good look in their eyes as we left our team meeting this morning and headed into position meetings."

Since being named the interim, he's talked to his team a lot about the ability to reset. To go from one good play and try to generate another. To put a bad play in the rearview mirror and come back stronger.

It's also been time for him to ask questions of the staff, compare notes and discuss things philosophically to get on the same page. To him, it all ties in, the action and reaction as well as the ability to reset no matter the situation.

"All of it is a reset. At the same point, I was trying to give the example of them with J-Marsh,  he's a running back that's in there playing gunner on the kickoff team and is incredible at it. A lot of people wouldn't look at his body type necessarily or his stature and say that's the position you would think, but he's the guy doing it. And he's the one that makes up his mind to do it.

"So, what I was trying to ask them is why not you? Why not you? If one player can affect, literally three series of offense and defense to start the second half, well, what happens if we have two players doing that, three players doing that, four players? And so, I think it all becomes reset."

Controlling the Playlist

Summers is aware that not all of his changes have come with a 100 percent approval rating, particularly the music which plays before team meetings, which now take place in the locker room. He casually tossed in there's a lot of Michael Jackson coming through the speakers, a bit of Marvin Gaye and a healthy dose of Earth, Wind and Fire. Even some Mariah Carey, to which he holds a mixed reaction.

"Anyway, we're going to have good vibes every day," he said.

Summers said it was not his playlist, but in a way, it really is since he holds veto powers. It started off with video coordinator Adam Hodge who Summers said was "quickly dismissed." So, Tyson Williams, the assistant defensive backs coach was handed the duties.

If he walks in and the energy isn't right, he calls for a classic.

"Then we typically go to 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough.' We occasionally go to Marvin Sapp,  'Never Would Have Made It,' as well," Summers said. "But they kind of know if it's Michael Jackson or if it's Marvin Sapp or if it's Marvin Gaye, I usually walk in and adjust it. I'm not necessarily in there for the entire precursor, so I don't know what they've done until I walk in."

Regardless, he's pretty sure the team is frustrated with him on this topic, and while he's not sure where the Carey tracks come from – it isn't Christmas music, by the way – he wants to make it clear he's not a hater, she's just not his go-to artist.

But someone is definitely a fan.

"I have no issues whatsoever. I was caught off guard," he said. "I was not expecting it. But if you know Tyson Williams very well, you know that he likes it. He likes a wide variety of things, and he's done a good job with it."
