Sean Mapson takes over as CSU soccer’s goalie coach

FORT COLLINS – Keeley Hagen solidified her coaching staff for the 2025 season with the addition of Sean Mapson as assistant coach. Mapson will lead coach the goalkeeprs, bringing knowledge from all levels, as both an assistant and head coach.

"Hiring a Division I goalkeeper coach with head coaching experience, like Sean,  is like adding a performance engineer to your program—someone who brings depth, vision, and a proven track record of developing elite talent that can elevate your team's performance from the goal line outward," Hagen said.

Most recently, Mapson served as an assistant coach at the University of Oregon during the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Before joining Oregon, Mapson spent five seasons at Idaho as an assistant coach. During his tenure, the Vandals held a record of 41-31-14 with four appearances in the Big Sky Conference Tournament.

The Vandals had one of the top defenses in the nation in 2022. They ranked 18th nationally for goals against average (0.65) as Idaho posted a 12-3-3 record. Goalkeeper Kira Witte earned both the Big Sky Goalkeeper and Freshman of the Year honor that season. She also finished No. 51 in Top Drawer Soccer's top 100 freshman list.

"I'm truly grateful to Coach Keeley Hagen and the entire support staff for giving me the opportunity to join such an accomplished and ambitious program at CSU," Mapson said. "The success this program has seen is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and culture of excellence that's been built here. I'm excited to contribute to that continued growth, especially working with the goalkeepers to help elevate their performance. The Rams are on an incredible trajectory, and I'm honored to be part of this journey as we aim for even greater success in the future."

Prior to Idaho, Mapson served as the head coach at Mississippi Valley State from 2016-2017. His coaching career began in 2011 at Southern Mississippi, where he worked with both the men's and women's soccer programs as an assistant coach.

Mapson attended and competed collegiately at William Carey where he was twice a GCAC all-conference team member as well as on the all-freshman team in 2006. Following his college career he returned to his native England and played for Leicester City and Macclesfield Town F.C.
